The first weapons settlers brought to this area were bows and arrows. A small village of only 40 people was established on the Hackensack River by Dutch farmers in 1664. In 1783, when the British took over New Jersey from the Dutch, they began stocking firearms for their own soldiers and began calling this new province "New York." In 1833, two men by the name of Cook set up a store in what is now downtown Bergenfield and started selling pistols and shotguns to local farmers. This became known as Cook's Guns & Ammunition Store. However, it was not until 1857 that Samuel Tilden opened his own store at 4 Main Street which would become known as Tilden's Arsenal. From here on out self-defense weapons sales rapidly grew throughout much of eastern NJ due to demand from law enforcement officials who increasingly needed these tools for protection during encounters with criminals or felons. The name "Bergenfield" comes from Dutch settlers who named it after Bergen Island in the North Sea. The first permanent English settler was Nicholas de Vries, who arrived in 1674 and bought land west of Bound Brook. In 1723, Moses Woodbridge moved to what is now Bergenfield from Hackensack Township and purchased title to all of present-day Essex County. In 1814, Captain John Stevens discovered oil rigs on Long Branch Creek in what is now bergenfield when he prospected for shale oil near Bound Brook. The discovery led to town incorporation on April 12, 1815 by an act of theNJ state Legislature under the leadership of then-Governor George Washington Morrissey). The original courthouse was destroyed by a fire in 1870; a new courthouse was built and opened in 1903. The borough has since undergone many changes including annexation by Paramus Township (1924), consolidation with Midwood (1948), and reincorporation as Bergenfield Borough (1983). According to the 2016 Census Bureau report*, there were 10,849 people living in Bergenfield Borough which makes up 3% of Essex County’s total population*.* *The number may have increased because some residents incorrectly reported their address as being inside Paramus Township or within Midwood Borough

Bergenfield is a borough in the New Jersey metropolitan area, located on the north shore of Long Island. As of 2010, the borough had a population of 14,868 and was the third-largest municipality within New Jersey after Paramus and Hackensack. The name Bergenfield is derived from two Dutch words meaning "beautiful place" or "92nd Street". The first settlers in Bergenfield arrived in 1664. They were led by Christopher Beekman who donated land to form what would become Bergenfield. In 1714, George Washington was born here and attended school at Stonington School before transferring to Trinity College in Cambridge, England for his undergraduate education. Upon his return to America he became mentor to future U.S Presidents George Washington and James K. Polk while living here with his family during the Revolutionary War (1775-83). In 1845, when Bergenfield became part of Township No. 2 of Middlesex County, it adopted a new government under which it remained an unincorporated community until becoming a borough on March 5th, 1951 following a referendum vote by its residents. Borough status allows for more limited municipal services than township status but does not give city-like powers such as zoning or planning control over municipalities’ affairs - these are exercised by their respective governmental bodies – county governments and Melville Township Committeemenière through their Board of Elections etc., respectively). Borough officials have included Policeman John Coughlin (1902-1995), Borough President Harry Siegel (1945-1950) and Borough Manager Edwin Jaffe (1963-1967). Every three years since 1975 there has been an election for Borough Council which consists of eight members who serve four year terms with one member being elected at large; current councilors are Jack McNamara (2015–present), Sayed Salim Zandile Dlamini (2018–present), Vincent Lopez Jr.(2019–present), Emanuel Goldstein(2020–2025), Isreal McLaughlin(2026‐2029) and Ronald Weinreb( 2030‐2032). A local history museum is located on 92nd Street between Park Avenue and Atlantic Avenue in town center adjacent to the former Stonington School building where President James K Polk Elementary School used to be located prior to its demolitionometime around 2000 due to concerns about asbestos exposure from adjoining buildings including one built by GEICO Insurance Company now occupied by Macy's Department Store which caused health issues for many students whose families lived nearby including lead poisoning problems among those children .
