The name Township of Bergenfield was first granted to the town on December 12, 1714 by Governor Christopher Wistar as an act of thanks for his support during the French and Indian War. On April 15, 1765, a group of settlers from Perth Amboy traveled to Bergenfield and applied for land grants which they received from Governor John Fletcher. In 1834, Abraham Lincoln visited Bergenfield while campaigning for president and purchased some land in the town without having gone through official channels. On May 3rd 1860 local citizens burned down what remains of Fort Lee on Long Island after failed efforts to purchase it from its previous owner Colonel Nicholas Bayard. Bergenfield Municipal Court was established on October 1st 1935 by then Borough President Harry Siegel with a vision to provide justice under one roof for all residents of Bergenfield Community College District #1 including students who attend other schools within our municipal boundaries as well as those living beyond our borders who have made donations or pledges that will help finance our school district's future operations such as building projects or capital campaigns which are required by law; this court also has jurisdiction over juvenile justice matters arising out of or related to school-related problems within our municipal boundaries; members thereof are Harry Siegel (President/Borough President), Mr. David Agranoff (Member At Large), Ms. Deborah Kulik (Member At Large), Mrs. Betty Kappelman (Member At Large) and Mrs. Mary Carney (Member At Large). The current Borough President is Harry Siegel who took office on October 1st 2018

During World War II much of Bergenfield’s heavy industry took place at nearby Pompton Lakes where plutonium being produced for atomic weapons was processed until 1958. Afterward many businesses closed down but some new ones started up including: Johnson Controls Inc., AI Group Inc., Toshiba America Corporation (later Deming Corporation), Motorola Solutions Corporation (later Intel) and Continental Edison Electric Company among others. Bergenfield was incorporated as a town on April 12, 1855, from portions of Hackensack and Caldwell townships. The first post office in Bergenfield was established on June 3, 1857. The first store in Bergenfield was the "Mount Vernon" Store, located on what is now Orange Avenue. It was operated by John C. Mount Vernon and his son Amos Mount Vernon. On July 1, 1861, the town of Bergenfield passed a referendum that granted rights to vote to all male residents over the age of 21 years old. This event marks one of the earliest steps in modern day democracy in New Jersey. The Panic of 1907 hit Bergenfield hard and within two years had forced most businesses out of business including the Mount Vernon Store which closed its doors for good on October 20th that year. The only thing left standing were some remaining farm buildings along Orange Avenue which remain today as part of the Town Hall complex.
