Bergenfield is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 34,858 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The name "Bergenfield" comes from Dutch "Bergenfelde", meaning "hill of the Berkshires". The first settlement in Bergenfield was founded by parents of Johannes de Valk and his family in 1714 on land that they had bought from the Lenape people. In 1742, John Hackett purchased land here and built a house called Hackett's Station on what is now Main Street. In 1834, Fireman John Addison built a post office here with letters sent through Trenton to New York City. When Morristown became an incorporated town in 1870, it retained Bergenfield's post office until 1895 when it became part of Newark am New Jersey (now its own separate municipality). Starting as early as 1892, local farmers began to grow hay for export to Europe along with other crops such as potatoes and turnips; these activities eventually led to Bergenfields nickname "Hayton Heights". A gristmill was built around 1900 and continued operations until 1922; it processed wheat until replaced by an all-electric mill after World War II. A cotton gin followed shortly thereafter and operated into the 1970s before shutting down due to pollution problems. Additionally, a meatpacking plant opened in 1928 which continues operating today as NJ choice Foods Incorporated.. In 1935–1936 two small dams were constructed southeast of town - one near present day Blue Hill Road and another about upstream on Asbury Avenue - forming Lake George Reservoir which would remain operational until drained by nature during Hurricane Floyd in 1999. This event also caused some damage to properties adjacent to the reservoir including homes on Asbury Avenue where water levels reached 8 feet high at some points! After years of decline due largely to weather patterns that included hurricanes Ike & Sandy (2005),Thomas Edison declared moratorium on new electric powerplant construction effective November 5th 2009 effective immediately cessation or delay projects totaling $2 billion dollars scheduled for construction between 2010-2020 citing environmental concerns especially regarding climate change resultant Silver Spring floods but this moratorium has not been implemented officially or Effectively since then... Today, Bergfield is one of the most vibrant towns in all of North Jersey and continues to thrive thanks to its rich history and welcoming atmosphere.
