On this property were built two small villages: Brentford Village and North Brentford Village, both named for Barnwell's home counties (Netherlands) that he had purchased during his travels throughout Europe as an English gentleman army officer and political advisor to George Washington. In 1824 Abraham Lincoln visited what later became known as North Brentford Village while on his way to attend a meeting at Morristown Manor with other leaders from New Jersey about forming a new state out of parts north and east of Pennsylvania's capitalPhiladelphia under Federal auspices. For many years after that meeting, North Brentford village lay off the main road between Bordentown Junction (now Westwood) in Middlesex County to the south and Hackensack Junction (now Allendale) in Union County to the north; it has been generally defined as being part Of Bergenfield Township since its incorporation as such on February 15th 1825 by an act passed by then-Governor Mercer with unanimous approval from all members elected thereto at large - though still subject to referendum by residents thereof every five years thereafter! Bergenfield is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,387 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the Dutch words "bergen" meaning hills and "field" meaning land. The first European settlers in what is now Bergenfield were Dutchmen who arrived in 1619. They named their new land after the hills near their home city of Amsterdam. The first store in Bergenfield was founded by Simon de Vries and his son Cornelis de Vries in 1702. In 1853, John Pemberton donated 1,000 acres (400 ha) to be used as a township to serve as an agricultural reserve for the residents of Hunterdon and Morris counties. In 1874, Bergenfield became one of 72 townships within Hunterdon County when it was formed from portions of Morris and Hunterdon counties. As part of this change, the name of the town changed from "Bergenfeldt" to "Bergenfield". This change took place because many people felt that the original Shakespearean spelling ("Bergfeld") did not sound very American or like things might progress thereabouts. The boroughs ofHackensack and Midland Heights were combined with Bergenfield on January 1st, 1954 to form a single borough called Hackensack-Midland Heights Borough which still exists today as a separate municipality within Hunterdon County but falls under the jurisdiction of New York City forgovernmental purposes due to its large concentration of high-rise buildings within its borders! It should also be noted that although much has changed over time with regard to demographics - especially given Hackensack's recent annexation by Midland Heights - most aspects associated with early industrial & commercial development are still visible throughout much parts of today's community including its vibrant arts scene which continues to thrive despite some recent challenges; key examples include two symphony orchestras (New Jersey Philharmonic Orchestra and Newark Symphony Orchestra), numerous theaters (including several world-renowned venues such as Metropole Theatre), major retail stores (such as Sears), restaurants (including multiple Saks Fifth Avenue locations) and even an amusement park – all while remaining largely affordable for most families!
Bergenfield was first settled in 1714 by Loyalists from New Jersey. The town was named for Nicholas Bergen, an early settler. In 1803, the township of Bergenfield and the village of Easton were combined to form the new borough of Bound Brook. The borough was dissolved in 1911 and its sections merged into the newly created township of Warren Township.
