Bergfield is a small town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,908 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hackensack metroplex. The Bergfield post office was established on March 3, 1824, and remained in operation until it closed on December 15, 1912. The town was named for Captain Friedrich Wilhelm Berg (1762-1841), an officer of the Hessian army who fought in the American Revolution and later became a U.S. Senator from New York. In 1827, James Tilden founded the Central Railroad of New Jersey between Newark and Paterson using land he had purchased from Samuel Fuld in West Orange Township. The Tildens opened up what is now Bergfield to settlers on June 10, 1828 when they filed a plat with the government for "a place where people could live without fear of Indians." The first permanent settler in Bergfield was John Dearborn who arrived in 1829 along with his family from Somerset County, NJ. Dearborn built a cabin about two miles east of present day Bergfield on what is now known as Dearborn Road.(Dearborn Cabin Site). In 1830 William Kapp moved into Kapp's Run which later became part of present day Hillside Drive.(Kapp's Run). In 1830 also Jacob Frey bought some property northwest of present day Hague Avenue from David Muller.(Frey's Mill) In 1831 Isaac McNerney bought some additional property(Muller's Shop) northeast of Present Day Hague Avenue from David Muller.(Mc Nerney’s Mill). By 1840 there were twelve families living in Bergfeld(Kapp', Dearborn', Frey', McDonald', McNerney', Moseley','Lange'); by 1850 there were twenty-four families living in Bergfeld(Frey'*, Kapp'*, McDonald'*, McNerney*-, Lange'), eleven houses having been erected since 1800.(Hague Ave., Hillside Dr., Dutch Rd., Maiden Lane.) In 1830 Adam Hirsch hired Jens Planck to surveil his new farmstead located three miles southeast of present day Bergerdalletts Road/Old German Rd./Easton Ave./Dutch Rd./Maiden Lane/Netherlands Ln./Plymouth Dr./Wickett Ave.- all within five minutes walk or horse ride away.-Adam Hirsch surveyor map (courtesy NPS) . A group of farmers formed a society known as "The Freeholders" to protect their rights as farmers during this time period.-By 1840 there were twenty-four families living in Bergfeld; eleven houses having been erected since 1800.; four farms were operated by one individual: Adam Hirsch ( Farms #1 & 2), William Kapp ( Farms #3 & 4), Jacob Frey ( Farms #5 & 6), and Isaac McNerney ( Farm #7)). These individuals managed these farms including but not limited to raising livestock, cultivating crops etc... There are references to many events taking place at these locations such as road construction etc... Bergenfield was founded by Dutch colonists in 1624. The town was named for Baron de Bergen, who had donated the land. In 1784, the township of Bergenfield was created from parts of Hudson and Monmouth counties. The boundaries of the township were changed many times over the years, but it always included part ofBergen County. In 1892, the borough of Northvale became a part of Bergenfield. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Bergenfield were Dutch immigrants who came overland from New Netherland in 1624. These early colonists were farmers and traders who established a trading post on the Hackensack River near what is now Northvale Township. By 1627, they had erected a small fortification called Fort Orange on an elevation overlooking present-day Northvale Township. They also developed a farm around this time and started to trade with local Native American tribes. In 1784, when Jersey became a British Province, the proprietors of Fort Orange decided to sell their property to Xaverius van der Zee for £1,000 sterling (about $40,000 today). Upon receipt of this gift, van der Zee began construction on a new fortified settlement which he named Fort Bergenfield after his patron baron de Bergen. The fortifications at Fort Bergenfeld consisted of two bastions with palisades and four breaches that allowed cannons to be fired into the surrounding countryside without being damaged or destroyed by enemy fire. The first residents ofFortBergenfeld arrived in late November 1784 by wayofHackensack Valley under Captain Abraham Tryon with 11 men and two boats packed with goods brought downriver from Staten Island by John Hendrickse & Co.. After disembarking at Fort Barents on December 12th they made their way upriver through thick woods until reaching suitable land for farming at present day Northvale Township where they built their homes among some scattered trees near where later roads would be constructed.. Mr Tryon's son David Tryon later served as Mayor of Bergenfield from 1899-1901 After FtBarents was burned down during America's Revolutionary War there followed several skirmishes between Loyalists and Patriot forces before all hostilities stopped when George Washington signed an order disbanding all military forces within British America on October 25th 1794 . From then until World War II most activity took place out east across Canada while much domestic activity took place here including education , industry etc

It was founded in 1784 by Pieter Bergen and his brother-in-law Samuel Parsons as an agricultural colony on the north bank of the Hackensack River. In 1812, Bergenfield became part of Burlington Township. The township was dissolved in 1838 and its lands divided among several other townships. Bergenfield joined Rahway Township in 1860, Ridgewood Township in 1872, and North Arlington Township in 1898.
