Bergenfield is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what would become Bergenfield were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1632 and landed on the now-defunct island of Manhattan. They built a trading post there and named it "Bergenfield" after their homeland of Bruges, Belgium. In 1764, the British captured Manhattan during the Seven Years' War and renamed it Fort George after General George Washington's military campaign against France. The British also renamed several settlements in New Jersey (e.g., West Orange) after military leaders or towns in England or Scotland who had helped gain independence from Great Britain during that conflict. In 1814, when Parsippany Township was created from parts of Monmouth and Atlantic Counties, Bergenfield became a part of Parsippany Township; however, it remained an independent village until 1881 when it amalgamated with other villages within Parsippany to form Parsippany Borough (later Union City). The first industry to come to Bergenfield was farming; however, this changed with the construction of the Erie Canal in 1825 which made transportation much easier between Pennsylvania and New York City than it had been before. This led to large businesses such as Wernick & Sons Paper Merchants coming to town and starting up mills which eventually spawned heavy industry with companies like Pohlman Electric Manufacturing Company beginning production at an early age here including electric lighting for homes and businesses and becoming one of America's leading producers of industrial goods until its bankruptcy in 1923. Large amounts of furniture were exported from America during World War II as many Americans processed materials needed for war effort here such as aluminum alloys for aircraft carriers etcetera while also creating jobs for local people directly involved in manufacturing along with supplying goods abroad to meet wartime demand. After World War II ended there continued growth due largely to suburban development around workers' housing developments along with increased commuting into northeastern Pennsylvania by people working in nearby cities such as Philadelphia or Trenton NJ etcetera driving down prices for basic needs while also creating new opportunities for individuals through entrepreneurship etcetera bringing about more stability than prior eras leaving Bergenfield today considered one of America's most economically thriving communities despite having some key challenges including high crime rates caused by its relatively small population size relative to neighboring municipalities etcetera
