In 1924, Bergenfield became a part of Ocean County and it remained so until 1974 when it was annexed by Passaic County.

Bergenfield was founded in 1714 by settlers from New Jersey. The town was named for Major John Bergen, an American military officer who served in the French and Indian War. In 1834, the township of Bergenfield was consolidated with neighboring Hudson Township to form a new borough. The first school in Bergenfield was a log cabin built on the site of what is now White Marsh Elementary School. The school opened in 1715 and burned down in 1827. A second school, also called White Marsh, opened in 1828 and lasted until 1840. In 1868, the township of Bergenfield merged with neighboring Hudson Township to form a new borough. The merger resulted in the construction of three schools: White Marsh High School (1868-70), Maple Shade Intermediate School (1870-72), and Bridgeport High School (1872-76). Bridgeport High School was replaced by North Holland Vocational Technical Institute in 1976 after it suffered damage from Hurricane Forde.
