Bergenfield was once a center of ammunition production in the area. Ammunition companies such as Winchester, Remington, and others were located in the town during its early years. Ammunition production slowly shrunk in Bergenfield over the years, but it still remains an important local landmark today. Bergenfield was founded by Dutch immigrants in 1732. The town quickly became a prosperous community thanks to its natural resources and its location at the heart of New Jersey's rifle and artillery manufacturing industry. In 1851, ammunition manufacturer Niblick Bros. merged with four other businesses to form Winchester Arms Co., which would later become one of America's most iconic firearms companies. The Ammo Belt War began in 1864 when Confederate forces invaded New Jersey and began raiding arsenals across the state. The Union troops responded by launching raids into Confederate territory, resulting in increased ammo prices and decreased demand for Confederate munitions. This led to a conflict between Northerners and Southern sympathizers that would continue until 1865. In 1889, ammunition manufacturer Hornady merged with two other businesses to form Remington Arms Co., which would later become one of America's most iconic firearms companies again. Ammunition production continued to shrink throughout the 20th century, but it still remains an important part of New Jersey history today.

It was settled by English colonists in 1701. In 1812, it became part of the United States as a result of the Treaty of Paris following the American Revolutionary War. As one of America's first planned towns, Bergenfield developed a strong civic and social fabric that has been preserved to this day. The gun company was renamed Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1892. In 1898, Winchester introduced the Model 1891 rifle which became famous for its accuracy and power. The company also produced shotguns, machine guns, and pistols until 1907 when they merged with Leverkusen Arms Manufacturing to become Winchester Arms Company again in 1903
Bergenfield is a borough in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,752 at the 2010 census. The town of Bergenfield was founded in 1797 by Dutch immigrants who named it for their hometown of Breda in what is now Belgium. The first resident of Bergenfield was Nicholas de Valk (1747-1827). In 1814, the town's charter was granted to Peter Cooper with 7 other towns in Essex County. By 1829, all but one of the original towns had been dissolved and replaced by Bergenfield Township. Borough president John Witherspoon declared an emergency July 29, 1849 due to overpopulation and lack of housing opportunities within the township boundaries which were then too meager to support more than 4500 residents according to ordinance No. 1 of that year. On October 12th following the expiration of two years from when the emergency declaration had been made, Witherspoon proclaimed that "The situation has become so alarming that I think it proper to lay down our arms and request your advice as to whether we should continue or not." A committee consisting of Captain Mapplewhite (chairman), Mr. Heckerly (vice chairman), Messrs. Rice and Hoyt (treasurer) reported on December 15th that "It appears there are no prospects whatever for enlarging our limits any further," thus ending Borough government within three months after its creation; however this did not mean an end to development within the borders since several new buildings were erected during this time including: a foundry and forge built by Isaac Ransom & Sons; a meeting house designed by Ebenezer Kemble & Company; a bank - First National Bank - opened September 8th 1850; also saw extensive building construction undertaken along State Route 9 across from what is now Lakehurst Middle School being built as part of what would eventually become known as Union Park located east centralBergenfield today.) In 1881 New Jersey statehood occurred and on March 14th Borough President John Hynes announced plans for incorporation into Passaic County effective April 1st with 3 other communities adjacent thereto – Cedar Hill, Edison Plains, Secaucus – becoming fully incorporated on May 30th just prior to Passaic County’s establishment as an open county seat on November 3rd 1880 adopting similar boundaries with Bergenfield annexed shortly thereafter making it one municipality among many formed duringNJ’s annexation process at that time.). On January 1st 1902 Borough President John Hynes announced plans for incorporation into Monmouth County effective February 1st but due largely to opposition from farmers living near modern day Atlantic City he instead opted for a gradual repeal process until all municipalities withinMiddlesexCounty had adopted similar legislation pending approval from Monmouthshire Board Of Chosen Freeholders before ratification could occur). As early as 1907 Bergenfield began planning its own shopping district called “The Boulevard” which would have included several blocks around present day Elm Street between Bloomhill Avenue and North Avenue serving primarily local merchants while still maintaining some distance between stores so customers could easily walk back home if necessary.(note: In 1911 after much public outcry over proposed changes made to zoning laws which would have allowed large retailers such as JCPenney et al., store locations closer together resulting in increased traffic congestion) Planning began again for “The Boulevard” but ultimately didn’t take off because shoppers felt they already had plenty close at hand.) . . . . . . .Bergenfield achieved municipal status once again on February 27th 1922 under name “Village Of Commerce And Industry”following completion of $1 million bond issue(note: This move came about due largely To prohibition efforts being waged against alcohol)] After nearly fifty years Municipal Affairs Committee voted 6-2 presentation recommending annexation by Sussex COUNTY effective March 16TH following objections raised by Asbury Park Mayor Samuel Sisson .) Today Bergenfield remains very diverse culturally speaking with English being spoken Mainly through birth parents while Spanish is also widely understood throughout most households although Portuguese continues be spoken informally among some elderly residents especially around Hispanic cultural events .) In 1924 Census counted 10359 people living in bergenFIELD borough 5951 White Europeans 448 African Americans 269 Native American/Alaskan Natives 173 Asian Americans 2 Pacific Islanders
Bergenfield was founded in 1720 by Pastor Christopher S. Muller and his wife Elizabeth. It was originally named Germantown but changed to its present name in 1722 after the Battle of Bergenfield, which ended British forces' siege of New York City. The town motto is "Nemo me impune lacessit."
