The Bellmawr Rifle and Pistol Club established a rifle range back in 1885. The club also began using pistols, but the range was closed in 1912 due to lack of funding. In 1934, the New Jersey State Rifle Association (NJSRA) donated land to the NJSRA for a new rifle and pistol range. The NJSRA donated an additional 20 acres in 1941, which made it possible to build a full-sized shooting facility on site. The NJSRA also donated $5,000 for equipment and training expenses for the new range. In 1951, the NJSRA donated another 20 acres of land to the club, which made it possible to build a Trap & Skeet Range. In 1959, the Bellmawr Rifle & Pistol Club added shotgun ranges to their facilities thanks to donations from Mrs. Raymond Kuchinich of Montclair Township. With this expansion, the club now had three ranges - trap (1961), skeet (1965), and sporting clays (1969). In 1977, after years of hard work by many members of the club, they were able to open their own handgun range -caliber only - called "The Gunsmiths" at 807-083 Apple Avenue in Bellmawr! This marks yet another significant milestone for our community – we’ve been able to provide high quality shooting opportunities not just for ourselves but also for neighbors who want to visit us as well!
Bellmawr is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 14,561. It is located on the eastern edge of the county and shares borders with Paramus to the north and Hackensack to the east. The borough was formed on April 1, 1874 from portions ofParamus andHackensack. The first settler in what is now Bellmawr was Nicholas Fenton who arrived in 1781 from England. He erected a small home on what is now Spring Street near what is now Borough Hall. The first post office inOWN Bellmawr opened on July 5th 1874. On November 15th 1875, THE NEW YORK TIMES published an article about a new town being established in Bergen County named for Major General George Washington Bell which led to HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE VISITING BELLMAWR EVERY DAY FOR ALL Sorties In support Of Our Flag During The Civil War! For many years this town continued as an agricultural center with several mills & large acreage of land cultivated until he death of his son John D’Angelo who owned most of it circa 1910 which left it largely unproductive & abandoned One account says that Captain John Hutton who manned one of these mills may have been responsible for saving much property from destruction during Hurricane SandyIn 1840s there were also several stores located here including two operated by Isreal Gottlieb & his brother Isaac which closed down around 1870-1880 A group known as “The Gents” bought most or all of these stores back in 1880 but they too failed To revive them over time There are still some remnants remaining today Some early residents include: John Pritchard (1785-1850), David Baird (1787-1859),John Beekman (1800-1867), Michael Kelly (1801-1853), Elijah Latham (1800-1864)and George Youngblood (1799-1860). On January 1st 1861, Morrie Madden settled at what is now called Belle Mead where he built a house soon after arriving from Ireland. After three years living there he moved to Plainfield Township where he became involved with politics and held various positions before dying at age 74 in 1865 while serving as mayor pro temporeof Plainfield Township. Many people associated with Morrie's life are buried nearby including his daughter Eleanor Madden Wiener and her husband Julius Wiener whose family had ownership interests in Belle Mead township land through their late father Solomon Weiner Beginning around 1800 there was considerable development taking place along Sussex Avenue leading south out of Plainfield into Newark then east into Belleville before terminating at Bound Brook heading northwest again into Newark This section later became part of North Caldwell . Many businesses grew up here such as: J&J Milling Company founded by Jobn Eickhoff in 1836 Which manufactured flour products; Belcher Brothers grocery store founded by Abram Belcher Sr., proprietor since 1830; Phelps Dodge Works started by Nathaniel Phelps Sr., later merged with American Iron Works; National Harvester company began production here beginning around 1915 A number also developed nearboundbrook Road/Route 27 known as Crystal Lake which included Macy's department store built 1911 An amusement park called Crystal Palace opened here between 1917 And 1922 , eventually becoming part of Asbury Park plc.; five small farms adjoined Belle Mead until 1931 when they were annexed into the borough Belle Mead remained mainly an agricultural community until 1940 when its population reached 10,000resultinginthe formationofa commercial zone adjacenttotheboroughwhich housed numerous businesses including: seafood restaurant Starfish Grill c1940 thru 1957; Wells Fargo bank 1935 thru 1952 - current location); Weisbrot bakery 1946 thru 1958; Kapp's meat market 1951 thru 1976; Grocery Outlet Incorporated c1947 thru 1990 First African Americanstore open hereFinallyduringthe1980s Bellmawr experienced significant retail development with establishmentoflocal mall(now AMC)containing multiplexes,,gas stations,,convenience stores,,apothecary shops,,,,etc.. resultinginan increasein housethatnumberedby2007was21%.
