Bellmawr is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden- Passaic-NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Bellmawr was first settled by Europeans in the early 17th century. In 1764, Colonel John Campbell and his forces were victorious against Native Americans in what is now known as the Battle of Bunker Hill; this event helped give impetus to settlement of what would become Bellmawr Township. A post office called Bethlehem was established in 1795, and remained in operation until 1836. The township grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location on the Susquehanna River and its access to farmland for farming and development; by 1871, it had a population of 20,000 people. In 1898, Bellmawr became one of five townships within Morris County created from portions of Hunterdon Township. As part of this change, all residents within Bellmawr except for a few military personnel were required to join the newly formed Morris Municipal Authority (MMA). This authority served as both a police force and local government for much ofBellmawr’s early history; however, it ceased to exist after 1942 whenMorris County transitioned into an all-encompassing county government. During World War II, Bellmawr played an important role in defense because its strategic location on Route 206 made it an easy target for German bombers; as a result, many homes were destroyed or damaged during the war but no lives were lost. Today's economy largely depends on manufacturing which has shifted fromoriginally rural areas such as agriculture into more suburban locations throughout New Jersey due to rising costs associated with labor productivity growth over time The borough remains home to many small businesses which have allowed significant economic redevelopment since post-war times including several successful medical practices along with several high technology companies notably Qualcomm Incorporated who are headquartered off Rte 206 just east of town limits

Bellmawr, New Jersey is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 17,898 at the 2010 census. Bellmawr was founded in 1784 by Sir John Bell and his wife Sarah Morehead. It became a borough in 1876 and a city in 1898.
Bellmawr was founded in 1795 by John Bell and his wife Deborah, who named it for their home town of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The area around present-day Bellmawr was first settled by the Lenape Native Americans. In 1800, Colonel John Forbes bought land near what is now Bellmawr from the Indians and established a military post there. In 1802, he built a mill on the Susquehanna River and started to produce cottonseed oil. By 1810, Forbes had also acquired some 200 acres (80 ha) of land north of central Bellmawr. He renamed the area "Bellmawr" after himself and his family. In 1814, Washington Irving bought some land in what is now eastern New Jersey from Colonel Forbes and began to develop it into an agricultural center with mills that manufactures flour, saltpeter, lead ore, rice paddy soil amendments, candles and soap products. In 1821–22, Irving sold some additional acreage to General James Wilkinson for $50 per acre (1/2 hectare). The new owners set about developing a road system for transporting goods between Newark Liberty Airport and other points in New Jersey; this road became known as Wilkinson Road. In 1825–26 Judge Augustus Kelley purchased 640 acres (240 ha) of upland along the Delaware River east of Philadelphia from George Whitehead for $5 per acre (0.27 ha). He decided to name the property "Bellemawr" after his wife's home town in Pennsylvania where he lived before coming to America at age 20 years old in 1784. Some people thought Kelley had named his new location after himself because he owned most of what is now northeastern New Jersey when it was acquired; others think that Whitehead may have given him the idea because he felt like he could add value to whatever property he purchased since white people were then beginning to settle in this area permanently rather than moving back and forth among different sites as they had done prior to European colonialism. The first settlement at Bellemawr occurred within two years following Kelley's purchase; however only 40 or so persons resided there at its inception due mainly to problems associated with transportation: water supplies were poor enough that crops couldn't be grown without irrigation while also making travel difficult if not impossible; nevertheless early investors did manage to bring some animals overland including pigs, poultry etc., which helped promote farming activity among local residents as well as providing meat for local markets during times when such things were not easily accessible or affordable elsewhere in similar proximity
