Bellmawr, New Jersey was once a small settlement in Mercer County. It was founded in 1841 by Captain John Bell and his family. The first post office was established in 1845. In 1861, the town became a part of Bergen County. In 1972, it became part of Passaic County.
Bellmawr is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,832 at the 2010 census. Bellmawr is located on the southern edge of Monmouth County and is bordered by Warren to the east, Ocean View to the west, and Brick Township to the north. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Monmouth County were Dutch traders and missionaries who called themselves "the Reformed Christians." In 1697, English colonists arrived via ship from Massachusetts and named their new land after John Bell (died 1592). The town was originally known as Newtown but changed its name in 1708 because of objections from Saybrook Colony (now Sayreville), which had been founded nearby. In 1754, when a part of Monmouth County became part of New Jersey, Bellmawr became a part of that county as well. In 1834, there were only ten people living in Bellmawr; by 1860 it had increased to over fifty. When Morristown Corporation was formed in 1868 with a charter from the state government for providing water services for towns within New Jersey's newly created Morrisania district (which included parts of Bergen and Passaic counties), Bellmawr leased space on its main street from Morristown Corporation. That same year saw the incorporation of villages within Morrisania – West Orange and East Orange – which led to an increase in population growth throughout Morristown Corporation's territory. In 1957–58, work began on building what would become known as Robert Moses Memorial Stadium; it opened forty-five years later on July 12th, 2014. The stadium hosts high school football games as well as professional American football games such as those played by the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles since 1960. As part of Morristown Corporation's effort to keep up with rapidly changing community needs during this time period – including investments in such things as water treatment plants and expanding infrastructure for public transportation – projects such as schools (including one serving both public elementary students as well as special education students) were built or renovated at an alarming rate throughout much of Bellmawr's history until recently; however most notably amongst these are two large shopping malls: One small mall located inside Robert Moses Memorial Stadium itself (), while another larger mall located just outside town proper (), both having multiple anchor stores along with other assorted retailers totaling over 1 million square feet (). The Washingtons were among the first white people to settle in what is now Delaware County on Long Island Sound. soon after they arrived they started farming land which they later donated to Benjamin Franklin who renamed it "Washington Parish." In 1786-87 Washington Parish voting precincts were created within what are now Wilmington Township on Cape May County line northward from Boundary Waters Lake along present day Route 9W from there until Indian Head Lakes racial boundary ran east-west just past present day Mount Laurel Township on Monmouth County line southward from Lacey's Point Peninsula eastward; thence along present day route 9W northerly unto Canada Creek then easterly unto Delaware Bay then westerly thereto; thence following Canadian Creek down river over rapids rapids becoming tidal waters at Delaware Bay near Howard Beach through tidal waters upriver about 2 1/2 miles long entering Chesapeake Bay near Annapolis Junction thence northeast across Anne Arundel County Line towards Baltimore City through open water between mileposters 12N & 12W thence generally offshore parallel with coastlines being 23 degrees N latitude & 76 degrees W longitude
It is generally accepted that the town of Bellmawr was founded by John Bell in 1712. The first settler in what is now Bellmawr, named David Fenton, arrived in 1697. In 1712, John Bell moved his family to the area and built a small cabin on the banks of the Schuylkill River. By 1800, the community had grown enough to require a schoolhouse and a store. A mill was also erected at this time, but it only operated for a short while before being destroyed by fire. In 1814, following the American Revolutionary War, General Washington captured Philadelphia and assumed control of Pennsylvania’s defense portfolio. Because of this event, many Northern Patriots fled to southern New Jersey in an effort to escape British tyranny. This migration led to increased population growth in Bellmawr as people started moving from rural areas into towns and villages throughout central Pennsylvania. By 1830,Bellmawr had become one of the larger settlements in central Pennsylvania due to its location between two major transportation hubs - Philadelphia and Albany – making it an ideal place for business and trade. During prohibition period (1937-1941), significant social unrest occurred within Bellmawr due to lack of local alcoholic beverage sales outlets available during prohibition era (see alcohol). In 1951, when Mercer County was created from parts of Philadelphia County, part of what became Mercer Township including what is nowbellmawrmoodyrestaurantwas transferred fromPhiladelphiaCountytoMercer County. In 1984-1985TheNewJerseyWelfare Agency demolished three homes located adjacent to Second Street Southeast in bellmawrmoodymall after complaints were received about noise level emanating from these homes; there were also claims that some residents living near these properties used public restrooms which caused neighboring homeowners problems with their property values).
