In 1853, when Philadelphia became the capital of the United States, bellmawr became part of Philadelphia County and continued to serve as an unincorporated community until it withdrew from government service in 1974. Today, however, most residents still identify as county residents because their township has no elected officials other than judges and trustees. During World War II, many Americans living near German-occupied France chose to remain anonymous and engage in underground resistance activities under cover of darkness while remaining undetected by Gestapo or Nazi agents operating within the area around Paris (Operation Overlord). Many citizens of bellmawr participated including Mayor Harry Siegel who provided intelligence support for local forces fighting against Adolf Hitler's Axis powers during Operation Overlord; he also received threats from informants working for GestapoHQ that if he were captured or revealed his role he would be executed immediately upon capture or discovery by Allied forces occupying France. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Bellmawr were Quakers who established a farmstead in 1740. The name “Belmawr” (pronounced Buh-LAM-wur) was derived from one of their meetinghouses which stood on the site of present day Belmarsh Park Cemetery today. In 1824, John Fenton built upon this farmstead a gristmill that became known as the Fenton Mill Ruins. The mill closed by 1848 after numerous failures due to poor management and weather changes – an event that forever changed bellowing operations in central Pennsylvania. In 1849, Bellmawr became a county seat because Morristown was then unincorporated territory within Warren County. However, for many years it remained an agricultural community with few commercial or industrial activities until waves of development began to pour into Center CityPhiladelphia during the 1960s and 1970s: redevelopment of downtown business districts; new housing developments such as Spring Garden and Northwest Philadelphia (now Wynwood); and increasing numbers of people between Trenton and Camden Township commuting to jobs in Center City or Philly each day.
