When Bellmawr, New Jersey was first settled in 1755 by British colonists, it was known as Hackensack. The town’s namesake, Nicholas Bellmawr (1748-1827), a soldier and governor of New Jersey, provided the town with its first gunsmith. In 1806, the town became the home of Philadelphia’s second Arsenal. Bellmawr is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 21,643. The name is derived from the Bell family who settled there in 1701. The Borough was formed on March 14, 1872 as a result of an act of the New Jersey Legislature. It is named for General James Bell (1755-1831), an officer in the Continental Army and delegate to Convention that created the United States Constitution. Borough residents are known as "Bellmunchers." The borough's origins date back to when farmland became available on Long Island after being bought by George Washington during his stay at Princeton University in 1764. In 1871, members of the Township Council passed a resolution urging President Ulysses S. Grant to create a township in Bergen County because of its potential for growth due to railroads and other new businesses opening up around Trenton and Newark simultaneously. The grant was given and on March 14, 1872, Bellmawr was formed from portions of Trenton Township and Newark Township. The first post office opened in Bellmawr on July 1, 1876; it closed on July 15th, 1974 due to changes made in postal service regulations following World War II. Bellmawr, New Jersey is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 4,912 at the 2010 census. Bellmawr was founded on November 20, 1789 by Increase Mifflin and associates of the Pennsylvania Manufacturers' Association as a small rural town named for its founder. It was renamed Bellmawr Township on April 14, 1846 after General James Fenton's victory over British forces during the Battle of Saratoga in that year. In 1886, Bellmawr became an incorporated village and then a Borough on March 15th of that year. As an incorporated village it had no voting power but as a Borough it had full control over all aspects of local government including budgets and zoning ordinances; however it did not have any police or fire department until 1912 when it formed its own department with Aaron Burr as its first Chief Financial Officer. On May 25th, 1896, the borough became part of the new Camden County when Camden County was created from parts of Middlesex and Hunterdon Counties. On January 1st, 1951, portions of Cumberland County were added to Camden County resulting in the annexation of much larger towns such as Sayreville and Morristown into Bellmawr Township including most importantly neighboring Cranbury which at that time included 5 square miles (13 km²) of land area more than any other municipality within Camden County save for Atlantic City. As one result of this annexation many businesses closed down or moved away leaving little competition for services in Bellmawr since there were few roads or transportation available to connect the town to other parts of county except by car or bus which took long periods to arrive/depart from central NJ). Many residents left for better opportunities outside their borough limits while others decided not to move because they felt they could stay where they were and enjoy good quality community services without being annexed into another larger municipality like Atlantic City which offered more services including schools and shopping malls across its boundaries
Bellmawr was settled by English colonists in the early 17th century. The town was originally called "Belfast" but was renamed for John Bell, an American Revolutionary War general and member of the Continental Congress. The town was incorporated as a separate municipality in 1868.
