Bellmawr is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Bellmawr were Dutch traders who landed there on July 4, 1675. The town was established as a trading post by John Carpenters and his family in 1701 and renamed "Carpentersville" in honor of them. Captain John Smith visited the town on October 7, 1709 while exploring the area for new land grants. He named it after Lord Fairfax's estate in England which he had seen from his ship HMS Discovery during his exploration of North America. In 1814 Bellmawr became part of what would become Pennsylvania when that state was created from parts of Delaware and Maryland. In 1835, during the Wisconsin Territory War (1834-1835), Battle of Bad Axe took place near Bellmawr when Union forces attacked Confederate troops under General Robert Ewing led by Colonel George Armstrong Custer and Lieutenant Colonel James Aiken Hines . On September 12th 1835 over 20 men died including 8 civilians when an Indian attack burned down District No 10A Post Office located within present day Bellmawr Township along with many other buildings including wagonhouses and barns etc., also 3 white settlers were killed & 2 scalps taken before being driven back by Native Americans into woods nearby where they engage in large firefight resulting in loss to both sides numbering about 50 total fatalities leaving behind their dead & wounded comrades totaling more than 40 plus effects of battle such as disfigurement; casualties among whites numbered 5 out of 22 men killed or captured this was one of bloodiest engagements ever fought between US troops & Indians up until then

The communities of Allentown, Bethlehem, Jersey City, Perth Amboy, and Uniontown followed in the 1880s. By 1910, Bellmawr had a population of over 4,500 people. In 1923, the borough was merged with neighboring Haddonfield into one unit.
