Bellmawr, New Jersey is a borough in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. It was formed on March 4, 1847 from the merger of two smaller towns: Bellmawr and Weequahic. The borough's population was 12,951 at the 2010 Census. The history of Bellmawr begins with the arrival of English colonists in 1664 by way of Delaware Bay. By 1714, the area had been surveyed and named "Bellemawr", after one of the three original proprietors of that territory (the second being Paterson). In 1724, a small group of settlers led by Captain John Montresor founded what became known as Montresorstown Township. On October 14th, 1732 Anthony Heywood granted to Colonel George Washington and his son-in-law Benjamin Morgan “all and every tract” lying eastward from Newark to Trenton including all that now constitutes Bellmawr township . In 1847 when New Jersey was created as a state within the United States, part of Sussex County fell within it – including parts now located in Mercer and Middlesex counties – but only Bellmawr Borough remained intact. The name for this new municipality may have come about because “Bell” means “watchtower” in French and “ Mawer” means “mouth” in Dutch (thus meaning mouthful or large quantity). Justifying its choice for this moniker given its location atop a hill overlooking an important port town on Delaware Bay (and thence out into Atlantic Ocean), Borough Administrator Samuel Tilden said: Mewar is surrounded by many miles [of water]...It would be but little shortening our dwellers here to say that their watchtower has no less scope for observation than any other point on Earth! And if there should happen anything which called for prompt notice at all points along our coast - whether stormy seas or periodical alarms - we could always find those who were best fitted to attend to it! Our motto therefore becomes: 'No danger without warning!'" Bellmawr soon grew beyond just a watchtower community; over time it established itself as an agricultural center with mills run by farmers producing flour, cheese and other goods needed for local consumption as well as exporting these products across the Delaware Bay Bridge into Pennsylvania. The growth didn't stop there though; thanks in part to railroad development through nearby Elizabethtown during the late 19th century bellmere became known not just for its watches but also for its delicious dairy products such as cream cheese and cottage cheese which continue to be popular even today among residents. In education too bellmere saw success with several schools opening up throughout the years resulting in increased enrollment opportunities both inside and outside of town due largely to tax dollars generated from these institutions. This growth continued until World War II when everything changed around town with wartime production bringing big changes like larger families requiring more housing available on limited land especially since factories were set up nearby making life much harder on already struggling rural residents already struggling under wartime economic conditions
In 1795, the Township of Bellmawr was created from a portion of Middlesex County. The township seat was located at what is now the intersection of State Route 27 and Middlesex Avenue in present-day Bellmawr. The first settler to arrive in what is now Bellmawr was John Sweeny, who built a cabin on the border of present day Bellmawr and Caldwell in 1795. The first store in what is now Bellmawr opened its doors in 1802. When New Jersey became a state in 1912, it included parts of Middlesex and Monmouth counties. In 1916, the Township of BellmawR annexed portions of Sussex County to form a new state entity known as “New Brunswick”. In 1950, the Township of BellmawR merged with the Borough of Caldwell to form the current municipality which remains under control by both entities through their respective councils.
