Bellmawr is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 20,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-based Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bellmawr takes its name from John Bell who purchased land here in 1795 and built a brewery which he named "The Bell". The town seat was located in what is now called the center of town. The first European to visit what is now known as Mercer County was Giovanni da Verrazzano on his voyage through North America in 1524. He named it Inca territory after the Inca king emperor Atahualpa, but this suggestion may have been based on Motovilco (now Monterrey, Mexico) where he had stopped for supplies before continuing his journey eastward. The first permanent European settlers were Dutchmen who arrived here between 1621 and 1626; they erected a small log cabin known as DeKalb Tavern on the site of present-day Main Street. They remain listed as the first Europeans to live permanently in what is today Mercer County when they filed a certificate of incorporation with the state of New Jersey on November 3, 1638. In 1808, John Cohan bought 5 acres (20 hectares) east of present-day Main Street from Nicholas D'Angelo for $1 per acre; that same year saw construction begin on what would become Hudson's Ferry Landing – an important transportation link connecting Trenton with points further north and south across Lake Passaic and Hackensack Bay. By 1815, just over two centuries after their arrival in New Jersey, settler James Broun had donated land comprising all that stands today within Township Line Road borders to form Borough of Bellmawr Township – one of only three townships organized by township line boundaries within Mercer County prior to its creation via an act passed by the NJ Legislature on February 2nd, 1834 following George Washington's move from Mount Vernon into Philadelphia along with his army during American Revolution). Borough Hall has been home to many local organizations including: The Mercers Colony Historical Society Museum & Library (established 1986), United Methodist Church (1917), Presbyterian Church USA (1898), First Congregational Church (1873), Episcopal Diocese of Morrisania/Mercer City/West Milford (1987), Stroudsburg Synod Lutheran Church & School District #1 v3 1978 et al., Holy Name Parish - Our Lady Of Charity Parish Chapel(1969). Bellmawr also contains Devils Den State Park located near downtown featuring a large rock formation known as Devils Den which can be seen from most parts of town and offers views down river towards Morristown and East Brunswick while still providing some isolation from most people living within easy reach outsideoftheparkinglotanddowntown areas.(2010)

Bellmawr was a small community in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,032 at the 2010 census. It is now part of Middlesex Township. The first European to visit Bellmawr was Giovanni da Verrazzano on October 14, 1524. He named it after his patron saint, St. Benedict of Nursia. What is now Bellmawr was settled by Germans in 1741 as a result of the Great Migration from Germany to the New World. In 1802-1803, Elijah Muhammad and his followers founded an agricultural colony called Mount Carmel in present-day Bellmawr Township with the intent of establishing a Muslim homeland in North America. In 1847, during Reconstruction in America following the Civil War, Governor James Ketchum ordered all white men over the age of 25 living within five miles (8 km) of any city or town to leave for three years; this order applied also to Native Americans living within those same boundaries who were not yet fully assimilated into white society. The order had been given as part of Ketchum's effort to create an American "Empire without limits." Some residents chose to stay and fight for their country while others fled for their lives. Among those who left were some key local leaders including William Smeaton and John Witherspoon Sr.. As more and more people evacuated their homes throughout much of central New Jersey following Reconstruction, Bellmawr gradually regained its former prominence as a center for business and culture until it lost its luster around 1950 when Interstate 95 bypassed it completely
The town of Bellmawr, New Jersey was founded in 1765 by settlers who came from England. The town prospered until the American Revolution, when it lost its land to the British.
