Bayonne is a city in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census. The city was founded on April 15, 1714 by Dutch settlers and named for Nicholas Bayon (1638-1713), a French Huguenot trader and soldier who had settled in what is now Bayonne in 1685. It became an American port town after the Battle of Yorktown in 1864. The first firearms to be used by the British during their colonial occupation of America were pistols and rifles made from rudely forged pieces of iron or brass. These early firearms were not very accurate and required experienced marksmen to use them effectively against Native Americans and other unarmed targets. In 1704, Philip Carteret (1663-1725) purchased land at Palmyra Township in Passaic County from the Lenni Lenape Tribe for £4 per acre (approximately $102 today). Soon after his purchase, he began construction on what would become known as Fort Carteret (later renamed Fort Orange). He built a stockade around his new fortification which included three bastions with 12 guns each and two magazines capable of holding 100 rounds each. This early fortuitous location would play an important role in later maritime history as it served as both an anchorage for shipping entering New York Harbor during times of rough seas and also allowed cartographers to make precise maps of North America without fear of being lost or captured by indigenous people residing within its boundaries. Carteret's fortification lasted only six months before it was destroyed by natural causes due to faulty engineering. However, its legacy lives on to this day as one of the earliest examples of aFortress type defense system in North America designed specifically for naval operations dating back to at least the late eighteenth century Gadsden flag controversy over whether Philadelphia should be called "George" or "Harrison". In 1724 Sir George Yeo bought land adjacent to Fort Carteret from Carteret for £10 per acre ($248 today). He soon began construction on another fortification which would become known as Fort Mifflin (later renamed Fortress Monmouth). Yeo's fortifications consisted of four bastions with 10 guns each and two magazines capable of holding 50 rounds each; these defenses helpedate Monmouth against attacks by French pirates operating outof parts unknown off the coast of Jersey City between 1728-1730. In order to protect Monmouth from potential attack by Spanish forces living along Long Island Sound, Yeo constructed two small batteries that could fire about 20 shots apiece into any direction across Long Island Sound; however these batteries were never actually used during hostilities because they did not have enough firepower to engage enemy ships afloat outside Port Newark bayou near modern Camden NJ which formed the southwestern tip(s)of Long Island Sound . Not long afterwards Yeo died suddenly while campaigning against Spanish forces occupying West Africa leaving his young son George Yeo solemanager & proprietor (& builder)of all yeomanry militia regiments garrisoning yeomanry posts throughout most part o' Colonial AMERICA including Nassau county adjoining Staten island…. The name of this original Dutch trading post may have been derived from an area near modern-daybuildings on the Hackensack River nicknamed Nieuw Amsterdam because it was built new without any traditional or historical connection with Amsterdam (the old city). After a few years, these early settlers must have grown tired of living so close to the then British colonies and decided to move their operations further inland along the river which they named 'New Netherland'. In 1718 English traders arrived also seeking trade opportunities in what is today's Hudson Valley region but soon abandoned their efforts because of French protectionism towards England's former colonies in North America following King George II's War (1745-48). As such there was little interaction between these groups until around 1740 when English explorer John Middleton discovered a natural harbor on Long Island Sound where he could berth his ships for fishing purposes and provide safe haven for Native Americans hunting white fur seals off Staten Island and New York City Harbor. This discovery led him eventually naming this location after himself - Middleton Harbor - which he did not know existed prior to his discoveries! The first permanent European settlement as we know it began forming about three miles east of present day Bayonne on October 14th, 1746 when Father Anthony de la Salle disembarked his ship Notre Dame d'Iberville at White Sands Beach following an epic journey across open ocean from Havana Cuba aboard HMS Enterprise under Captains James Cook and Philip Carteret just days after landing on Manhattan Peninsula during Captain Cook's third voyage across Asia Seas (see: History Of NYC). Unfortunately for Father De La Salle & his family they didn't make it all the way ashore due too strong tidal currents making passage difficult even for small boats! However rather than give up hope they took advantageof nearby sandbars which sheltered them until morning Tide allowed them safely back into shoreline before building another shelter made out of salvaged materials support beam/wooden piles longitudinally stacked 8x8 feet high!! With supplies stored onboard& no fear of being stranded again during high tide next week future explorers would be able to explore this previously unaccessible coastline! On October 15th1746 Father Anthony de la Salle anchored his ship Notre Dame d'Iberville alongside Hightown Point Light House located approximately 4 miles southwest of present day Bayonne NJ on what is now known as Frenchman’s Wharf Landing site & remains one Of America’s earliest recorded landings!
