The Bayonne Observatory was founded in 1839 and has been operated by the University of Delaware since 1916. The city's history can be traced back to several years earlier when two Dutch families, the Hollandse family and the Vanderbilts, arrived in what is now Bayonne. The Hollandse family started a small grocery store on Montgomery Street and soon became one of the most powerful business interests in Bayonne. They were also influential political figures, serving as Mayor from 1829 to 1840 and as Congressman from 1845 to 1849. In addition to their business activities, the Hollandse family also donated many items including a large piece of land for a public school district and money for renovations at the Bayonne Theatre. The Vanderbilts were another important family arriving in Bayonne around this time. Their patriarch, Cornelius Vanderbilt, hadcome overland from America on his famous shipthe Dolphin during the early 1800s and had become one of New York's leading businessmen. He also acted as mayor from 1830 to 1834 and played an important role in setting up our first public school system.
Bayonne, New Jersey is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 993 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York metropolitan area. Bayonne was founded on April 14, 1676 by colonists from England who named it for Baron de Bayonne (1575-1627), a French nobleman who had arrived in North America in 1624 and purchased land at what is now Bayonne and Cross Keys from the Dutch. The original town hall was located on West Lake Street between Third and Fifth Streets. In 1836, the borough of Ocean City was merged into Bayonne; however, Ocean City retained its own government until 1965 when it became part of Monmouth County. The first store opened in Bayonne on Fourth Street in 1751 by Nicholas Benezet and his brother-in-law Pierre Juneau. John Smith started a ferry service across Long Island Sound to bring goods to Atlantic City in 1814. In 1850, Abraham Hirsch established two tanneries along Broadway near today's Lenox Square Boulevard; these were later replaced by one tannery and four shoe stores on Broad Street which remain today as Oneonta Shoe Company Handicrafts Ltd.. In 1865, bayonets were used during the American Civil War to protect soldiers marching through town from Confederate snipers hiding among the buildings lining Seventh Avenue north of Market Street; this incident is commemorated with an annual unit parade through town every September that attracts thousands of onlookers. On July 4th 1870, Yankees under General George Meade fought against Union forces at Battery Wagner near present day State College Campus before retreating back up Seventh Avenue towards downtown Bayonne where they burned much of what remained of Fort Wagner after surrendering without resistance. On December 12th 1903 a fire caused extensive damage to both First Presbyterian Church (now Stroud Methodist Episcopal) on Park Row northwest of Main Street and Second Presbyterian Church (now Our Lady Queen Of Peace) just east of Third Street; both churches reopened within days with new ministers but lost all their building material due to flames that destroyed most everything combustible inside three hours while also damaging several hundred homes including many barns which resulted in $6 million worth OF damage done to those structures over twenty years plus $1 million worth more than would have been suffered if not for that winter’s ice storm which disrupted transportation so badly that houses could not be saved). In 1935 a large gasoline station called "The Girdle" stood adjacent to present day Town Hall off Highbridge Road south of Court Avenue; it closed its doors following World War II because there was no longer enough demand for gasoline products coming out of nearby Paramus Junction refinery although some trucks continued stopping by the lot until 1969 when they were converted into housing Manor House Place Inc., future home rule Township Hall/Elks Lodge #2

Bayonne is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 22,594. The name comes from Bayonne Creek and the nearby Mount Pleasant Reservoir. The area that would become Bayonne was inhabited by Lenape Native Americans before Europeans arrived in the area in 1675. In 1724, Nicholas-Jacques Conte founded what became known as Monmouth County; Bayonne was part of it until 1834. On April 14, 1794, during the American Revolutionary War and as part of negotiations leading up to the Treaty of Paris (1797), General George Washington's forces burned much of Staten Island and eastern Brooklyn to prevent their capture by British forces under Admiral John Sackett. In 1819, Bayonne received township status from Middlesex County when Parsippany Township was created adjacent to it on the north side of bayou Secaucus. In 1837–38, Alfred Ternan erected a wooden frame courthouse on what is now First Street and Main Avenue in downtown Bayonne for use as a Superior Court hearing room for local judges and justices of peace. It continued to be used until 1920 when new county courthouse building opened on Third Street near today's Princeton Avenue. During World War II many businesses were located along Easton Avenue between Third and Fourth Streets due to its proximity to then- naval air base Grosse Pointe Naval Air Station (now Joint Base McGuire-Dix). After hostilities ended in 1945, many businesses closed down as wars destroyed most business sectors throughout America; however some reopened after being rebuilt or rebased elsewhere including one case where Bayonne had an ENTIREly rebuilt old Navy Yard! The Borough Council has five members elected at-large with three seats vacated each year because two councilmembers are running for office at once: Mayor Coleman Young (D) served two terms ending December 31st 2014 & Mayoral candidate Morris Klink D Jr.(I) served one term ending December 31st 2015 & he will serve out his unexpired term which ends next January 3rd 2017 through November 30th 2017 . Bayonne was founded on the site of an earlier tribe of Native Americans, the Lenape. The town was named for John Fortunato Bayonne, a wealthy investor in early Bayonne land development. In 1854, Bayonne became the first municipality in New Jersey to be established under the new state Constitution. It grew rapidly during the 19th century as a result of its important rail junction and maritime industry; it had a population of over 100,000 by 1900. However, after World War I destroyed much of Bayonne's manufacturing base and navy yards, its population declined until reaching around 30,000 by 1950. Although portions of Bayonne have experienced strong economic growth since the 1990s, most residents remain poor.
