Bayonne is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 27,735 at the 2010 census. Bayonne is known for its rich history and architecture dating back to the early 1800s. The borough was formed on October 14, 1812 from portions of Asbury Township. The first European settlers in Bayonne were Dutchmen who arrived by ship in 1632. They founded a small town called "AschertOWN", which eventually became Bayonne. In 1739, a group of English settlers named John Woolridge established themselves near what is now Park Avenue and White Street in what is now Bayonne. Woolridge's settlement was destroyed by Indian attack in 1740 but he re-established himself as an Englishman and renamed his new town "Bayonne". In 1812, Bayonnese voters were asked to join the newly created Monmouth County as part of an effort to increase the population size of New Jersey within reach of the federal government following the War of 1812. On October 14th, 1812, Bayonnese residents voted 3-to-1 in favor of joining Monmouth County and it was incorporated into the state on November 12th that year under the name Asbury Township. Asbury Township quickly grew into one of New Jersey's most prominent communities due to its rich history and architecture dating back to the earliest days of Pennsylvania settlements around 1724-27 led by Captain David Forbes (1723-1802). Many notable structures were erected during this time including Forbes' Tavern (built circa 1760), Trinity Church (built between 1785 and 1800), Sawmill Row Schoolhouse (built c 1830), Presbyterian Chapel ( Built between 1840 and 1850 ), Girdershield House ( built c 1800 ), home for then Ulysses S Grant during his boyhood years(It later served as Head Quarters for several successive Governors)and many other buildings that can still be seen today including: brick courthouse building completed circa 1870 featuring Gothic Revival features; original jail; rusticated stone fence surrounding former cemetery; large number of contributing farmhouses from various periods throughout township history; bayou/riverfront property acquired from Rutgers University in 1950; numerous commercial properties along Park Avenue since its incorporation into city limits over 100 years ago such as: candy store(later Jello Biafra's); dry cleaner(now Applebees); bakery(now Pohlad's Bakery); clothing store(later Sears & Roebuck); drugstore(now CVS Pharmacy); post office bribery scandal[which ended with indictment]; Masonic Lodge #2 & #3 originally constructed ca 1830&1840 respectively located on Sawmill Row Road opposite schoolhouse also serves today as clubhouse for local Rotary Club[Plymouth Meeting Room] prior their conversion into apartment buildings area currently being used by community center functions

Bayonne is a borough in New Jersey, located on the Hackensack River. The population was 23,972 at the 2010 census. Bayonne is one of the most rapidly growing municipalities in New Jersey and its population has doubled in just 50 years. It became an incorporated municipality on February 14, 1916 and was named for Bayonne, Netherlands. In spite of this Dutch heritage, Bayonne is home to many people from all over New Jersey as well as points out of Pennsylvania and Delaware. The boroughs of Bergen County and Passaic County were merged into Bayonne on April 1, 1948 following a referendum by both communities. As such, Bayonna now includes all of Bergen County plus parts of Passaic and Hudson Counties. Bayonne was originally settled by Germans who arrived during the Moravian colonization period in 1709-1711A. They built churches, schools and other homes near the present day intersection of Routes 9W and 10E (now called Willow Street). By 1838 there were only about 100 German immigrants living in Bayonne when it became part of Ulysses Smeed's Township (now part of Union City). However, within five years that number had swollen to almost 3200 with new arrivals from Germanyussia (the eastern territories controlled by Russia at that time) as well as Poles from Lublin and other areas east of the Vistula River. Many refugees found work building canals or farms while others returned to their homes country after World War I ended in 1918 with no plans to permanently leave again. The first schoolhouse opened in 1839; two more followed until 1845 when a permanent school building was erected on Maiden Lane which served grades Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade until 1955 when West Side High School opened nearby on Willow Street making it the first high school west of Midtown Manhattan for African Americans entering 9th grade! This event helped spur further immigration to Bayonne over time as different families chose this location because it offered access to quality education for their children regardless of race or color! In 1876 John Prentice founded Prentice & Sons grocery store which still operates today across 2 streets from where he first opened his business! Prentice also founded First National Bank which still exists today along Broadway - one block north from where he once located his bank office! By 1906 there were 12 businesses operating in what is now Bayonne including six grocery stores plus three hotels/motels - making it one OF THE BIGGEST BUSINESSES IN BAYONNE AT THAT TIME! Later that same year reorganization took place within Ulysses Smeed's Township resulting in consolidation into two municipalities: Bayonnette moved FROM WILLOW STREET TO FOURTH AVENUE IN 1912 NEAR WHERE NOW WEST SIDE HIGH SCHOOL IS LOCATED and finally Borough Heights MOVED FROM HACKENSACK RIVER AVE., NORTHEAST OF BAYONNESITE TO NOW ON HAMILTON AVENUE BETWEEN WILLOW AND QUEENS BLVDS., ACCOMPANIED BY THE ESTABLISHMENT OF NEW YORK STATE JUDGES COURT SYSTEM DERIVING OUT OF PREVIOUS CITY LAW ENFORCEMENT SERVICES PROVIDED BY MAYOR JOHN McMILLAN AND HIS BUILDING #2 ON HAMILTON AVE., ONLY 2 MILES EAST OF THE BOARDwalk THAT WAS CONSTRUCTED TO HOUSE ALL BUILDINGS UPON THEIR merge

In 1784, Bayonne became part of United States under its new Constitution. The town experienced rapid growth during the 19th century, with an increase in population to over 60,000 by 1860. However, during the American Civil War, Bayonne was heavily bombed and damaged by Confederate forces, losing many homes and businesses. After the war ended, Bayonne experienced some slower but steady growth until World War II when it reached its peak population of 100,000 people. During World War II, Bayonne also played a significant role in developing military technology such as radar and jet aircraft.
