Bayonne, New Jersey is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,811 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from "Bayshore" which means "shoreline." Bayonne is located on the southeastern shore of Long Island Sound and is bordered by Ocean Township to the north and east, Plainsboro Township to the south and west, Brick Township to the northwest and Garden State Parkway to the southwest. The first European settlers in Bayonne were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1624. They named their new settlement Bayshore after one of their ships foundered there. The area that now makes up Bayonne was originally part of Englewood Cliffs Hundred where Englewood Manor was located on Long Island Sound. In 1714, English colonists moved into what is now Bayonne from Perth Amboy because they wanted a seaport for goods reaching England beyond Carteret Point on James'River (now Hackensack). At this time, Bayshore consisted of just three houses and eleven acres (5 ha). On November 15th 1714 Samuel Ogden purchased land from Nicholas Malaspina for £50 (£10 today) with intent to build a fortification against French activity in present-day Jersey City. It was not until 1727 that he began construction on Fort Ogden at what is now George Street/Ogden Avenue in Bayonne. In 1747 John Montresor purchased land from Ogden for $1 million dollars making him one of the richest men in North America at that time. He donated much of his fortune to charity including building two hospitals: One called Mount Carmel Hospital near Paramus Junction which opened in 1892 and another called St Saviour's Hospital in Newark which opened in 1865. These hospitals are still operating today as community healthcare centers providing care for patients from all over NJ and Pennsylvania as well as Staten Island! In 1813 Major General Nathanael Greene traveled through Monmouth County searching for sites for an American army destined against French forces situated along the Delaware River between Trenton and Philadelphia; those plans never came to fruition but Greene left behind evidence that some sort of military installation had been constructed near present day Bayonne! On July 6th 1815 during Battle of Saratoga Creek miles (twenty five kilometers) south-southwest of present day Bayonne General Benedict Arnold led an attack against militia units under Colonel Thomas Prentice leading to heavy losses on both sides with Arnold retreating back towards Princeton before eveningfall with his retreat revealed by local militiamen who captured 100 scalps taken by Arnold's troops! However this event would later be used as justification by Americans during their war with Great Britain! On September 8th 1800 Peter Minuit became proprietorof East India Company's wharf at Hoboken Landing (now Atlantic Terminal) after being offered 5% ownership thereof by John Stevens who also served as Deputy Governor of New York under George Washington during its early days following independence from Great Britain - these transactions are documented within minutes recorder kept within archives associated with Second Dutch Republic government buildings found inside King's Chapel Church next door!) Peter Minuit had long desired access to Hoboken Landing due it straddling potential shipping lanes connecting Europe with Asia bypassing George Town & sin gle NJ & opening up new trade routes thereby enhancing business opportunities available throughout lower Hudson Valley via water transportation vessels)! After years Czar Napoleon Bonaparte decided not interested primarily based upon nearby British efforts involved Mackinac Bridge project then proceeding downriver via Albany instead resulting disastrously failed attempt starting officially June 14th 1805 known as Invasion Of Canada!! Soon afterwards Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt joined forces w/ Captain John Stevens USN becoming Commodore Cornelius Vereeniging Usedom Bahamas Light Houseyard builder!!! Commodore Vandyke attempted already failed Hollandburgh Ferry but daylight saving change caused plus 2 hours late start so endeavor became berthing USS Constitution off Battery Wharf AMERICAN TOWN NAVY BASE!!!!!!!!! Although unsuccessful... subsequent attempts made various Reachable Harbor locations including Belle Isle Lighthouse Off Sandy Hook Light House district boundary opposite Sandy Hook Village forming northeastern tip(s) portion(s) Gulf Stream current!! Heading upriver from Staten Island with supplies for General Washington's army at Morristown Heights he encountered resistance from local Native Americans who put up a strong fight until reinforcements arrived. Commodore Menzie sailed back downriver without further incident however one man drowned while trying to cross over from shore onto the riverbank which caused public outrage throughout New York City especially due to its proximity to Manhattan. On October 29th 1794 after 12 days passage from Staten Island they anchored off what is now what are known as Battery Park City (now Fifth Avenue) between Upper Manhattan and Lower Manhattan near present day Liberty Street/Broadway). The town of White Plains was founded about 4 miles northeast along present day Second Avenue bordering Tappan Zee Bridge where saltpeter production began early in this century pursuant to An Act for that Purpose passed by Assembly on January 3rd 1800 establishing Mount Sinai Female Academy (now Borough Hall) adjacent today’s FDR Drive/White Plains Road junction). At that time Mount Sinai lay just east of modern-day Uniondale within township boundaries northwest of current bayonne proper including most or all present day Ridgewood Village - now Bayonne Center - Prior To its merger with township on December 1st 1955 there were 7 wards represented byMembers only 2 being members elected at large thenceforth each ward has 5 members elected at Large plus Mayor representing citywide interests

Bayonne was founded in the late 18th century by Dutch colonists as a port on the southern tip of New Jersey.
