Bayonne is a borough in New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 29,711. Families began moving into Bayonne from all over New Jersey during the early days of its development as a town because there were no real opportunities for advancement within either Dutch or English society at that time. By 1815 only one-fourth of Bayonne's residents were Yankees while most of its citizens were German refugees who had escaped persecution in Europe during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1837 an act was passed by Congress establishing "a board" to manage public schools within each state so that educational opportunities could be extended throughout America's Great Lakes region including those living near Philadelphia as well as Germans residing in Pennsylvania and Delaware who did not have public schools available to them. The first schoolteacher assigned to Bayonne was Anna Sheehan who taught school until 1861 when she became principal at West Hackensack High School which remains open today thanks to financial support from local businesses including IBM’s main campus location on Monroe Street across from Borough Hall).
