The city of Atlantic City, New Jersey was founded on May 14, 1834 by the merger of two small villages, Aberdeen and Colts Neck. The original inhabitants were Native Americans who lived in wigwams along the Hackensack River. In 1835, a group of Englishmen led by Daniel Gibbs bought land north of the river and started to build a trading post. On July 1, 1836, Atlantic City became a town under the jurisdiction of Bergen County. The first mayor was John Purdy. By 1860, there were over 4200 residents in the city and it had become an important center for commerce and industry. In 1861, Mayor Isaac Pitcher approved plans for what is now Trump Plaza which would be the world’s largest indoor arena at that time. It opened on November 15th, 1911 and served as both a musical venue and commercial center until 1978 when it was demolished to make way for new development. The area around Trump Plaza remains one of Atlantic City’s most vibrant neighborhoods with many businesses still active today including Boardwalk Bazaar & Boutique®, Revel Casino Hotel & Spa®, Hard Rock Cafe® & Grill®, First Niagara Casino Resort& Spa(), Christie's Place mall*, etc.*

The first European settlement in what is now Atlantic City was a small fishing village called "Boucton" which served as the western terminus of the New Jersey Turnpike. The area that became known as Atlantic City was originally part of Monmouth County. On July 26, 1664, King James II of England granted letters patent to John Woolridge and others for "the Township of Southwick in this county." This township was divided into three parts on January 1, 1776: Cape May (now Atlantic City), East Brunswick (now Elizabethtown), and West Brunswick (now Neptune).
