Wilkinson's idea was to connect these counties by shipping goods downriver from Philadelphia throughNJ to Wilmington in Delaware and then northward via Hudson River toNYC or points east through PA to Baltimore where they could be loaded onto ships bound for England or Europe. However, because there was no tidal watercourse connecting NJ withPA nor any suitable landing sites for large vessels due to obstacles such as sandbars and shoals, this project failed to take off; instead, it was replaced by a more efficient canal system which connected Philly with NY City via Jersey City in 1825).
