In 1906 Anthony Caruso bought control of D'Angelo's company and renamed it Caruso Navigation Company Limited which became part of American Transports Incorporated (ATI). ATI developed heavy naval fleet operations outfitting coastal passenger ferries into ocean-going ships capable of transiting through any number of seas without being stopped or hindered by reefs or shoals. This gave rise to speculation that if only a few large corporations could own such fleets then monopoly power would be attainable over trade routes desired by various countries outside their borders. In 1946 American Tobacco announced plans to build a new cigarette factory at what is now known as Monmouth County Airport just across Route 23 from whereupon all tobacco products would be exported from the state pursuant to Interstate Tobacco Agreement provisions negotiated between United States Department Of Health And Human Services Administrator Jesse Helms (R-North Carolina) and then-Senator Joe Biden (D-Delaware). When Europeans began to arrive in the area that is now New Jersey, they were influenced by the Native Americans. They encountered the Lenape people who lived in what is today Delaware and New York. The Lenape were a branch of the Algonquian tribe which came from India. The European settlers were attracted to the lucrative natural resources that were available in this area and believed that these would make this region an important part of Europe. The first European settlement was made on September 11, 1607 by Giovanni da Verrazzano, captain of a ship called Nereus. This was followed by another group of Europeans on January 2, 1608 by John Smith who sailed up the river Hudson. In 1609, Dutch Captain Hendrick Corstiaensen explored what is now Staten Island and discovered land bordering what is now Atlantic City. Englishman John Day also explored this area in 1611-12 but did not find any valuable resources or land. It was not until 1664 when Colonel Jameson granted a charter for a town named Newark with boundaries including present-day Atlantic City and Paterson, New Jersey. The town was founded because of problems with smuggling goods across the river during the time period known as The Deacon's Rebellion (1649-1653). At first, Atlantic City functioned as a small trading post between its neighbors and developed into anImportant commercial center due to its location at one end of Route 35 between Trenton and Philadelphia along the Delaware River Delta region; it became an important transportation hub during the 18th century Pennsylvania Campaign against British forces during The American Revolution (1776-1783). At its peak between 1790 and 1800 Atlantic City had over 1 million inhabitants making it one of America’s most populous cities at that time
