Gun targets have been a part of Atlantic City's history for over 100 years. The first target shoot in the city took place on October 5, 1892. At that time, there were only shotguns and handguns available to the public. The first gun target was built by Harry Sheppard at his property on Sussex Avenue. The first gun show in Atlantic City took place on November 12, 1896. That year, five guns were auctioned off during that event. One of those guns was a Colt Model 1860 revolver donated by Colonel John Davenport of New York City. In 1899, the first steel target became available to the public from the shipyard of J & W Laughlin in Camden County. It weighed 350 pounds and had a height of 34 inches when it was set up at 16th and Market Streets in downtown Atlantic City. In 1912, Gunnery Sgt Jesse Helms donated an America's favorite rifle - the Winchester Model 1886 - to Atlantic City Museum for display as part of their Firearms Collection exhibit. That same year saw the opening of what is now known as "The Sheppard Building" on Sussex Avenue which housed both Target shooting ranges and local businesses such as banks and cigar stores at one time (it still does). With its characteristic red roof and white pillars, it is easily identifiable today as one of the most significant buildings inAtlanticCity's history! On January 1, 1928, "The Record" newspaper reported that a new Gunnery Sergeant had joined forces with Mayor James Vesey to start Operation Neptune's Spear - an effort to clean up Atlantic City streets after numerous nights of drinking and carousing had taken its toll on society. Unfortunately for gun enthusiasts everywhere who appreciated all things related to firearms, Neptune's Spear quickly went awry and ended with Vesey being shot dead outside his home by gunmen wielding automatic weapons! Vesey's death effectively symbolized an end togun targets activity in Atlantic City – although some people continue to shoot targets recreationally here today!

Despite this significant damage and loss of business (the entire gaming industry lost $500 million), many residents chose not to evacuate their homes during Hurricane Irene; instead they made use of generators and stores were open late into Sunday night as businesses opened early Monday morning so customers could process returns before being processed by local officials for tax purposes. As a result of these efforts, only minor damage occurred within downtown area with most areas experiencing some flooding but no significant damage outside of those areas specifically impacted by Irene).
