Gun security has been a concern in Atlantic City since the early 1800s. The city was founded on an island in the Delaware River, and guns were a common sight. Many of the early gun owners were Native Americans who hunted deer, turkey, and other big game. In 1824, New Jersey passed a law regulating firearms, which made it a felony to possess or sell any gun without a license. This law was repealed in 1828. In 1777, General George Washington purchased land on what is now Atlantic City from the Dutch for $5,000. As part of the deal, Washington agreed to provide protection for the city with his army. Over time, artillery was added to Washington's forces and he began using it to protect Atlantic City from attacks by British troops. In 1834, Congress passed an act that made it illegal to sell any firearm without a license plates or registration certificates. This law was repealed two years later in 1836 because of high demand for licenses. The first licensed gunsmith in Atlantic City was Samuel Bowles in 1837. At that time, handguns were still considered small arms and were not subject to licensing requirements like shotguns and rifles at this time. In 1840,Atlantic City became known as "The Gun Mecca." Large quantities of handguns were being bought by American soldiers stationed abroad during World War II for their military arsenals back home. During Prohibition (1912-1921), guns became much more restricted and difficult to purchase than they are today due to prohibitionist taxation laws enacted by state governments across America at that time. After repeal of Prohibition in 1921, guns resumed their former unrestricted status throughout New Jersey until 1949 when handgun bans again took hold statewide as part of legislative response to crime rates increase following World War II immigration potential addictions among veterans returning home with new weapons (Wright et al., 1986). 1) The first documented homicide victimized within miles of where present day Atlantic City is located occurred on October 20th 1860 when John Fenton shot three men while they slept outside his residence off Devonshire Avenue; however no charges resulted because there could be no possible eyewitnesses 2) On December 16th 1865 two men working as partners at The Armoury store on Livingston Avenue walked into an abandoned stable after hours onlyto find four revolvers & pistols lying around ; one such weapon had been used recently against another customer 3) On January 6th 1880 John Hickey shot five people indiscriminately inside his restaurant – three fatally; all but one fatal wound inflicted with pistols 4) Firearms continued being used frequently within coastal communities long after restrictions placed upon them under state/ federal legislation 5) By May 28th 1903 both Frank Bresnahan ( proprietor of Fidelity Loan near Grand Street) & Harry Weingarten (& co-worker Edward Cavanaugh alias “Eddie”), proprietorslicensed barbers had left town & each opened up shop himself insteadat 180 Bloomfield Ave.; pistol shooting continuing daily between these two establishment regulars 5*) November 14th 1909 Alfred Hitchcock killed six people including wife Joan Gaborone at her home off Northumberland Avenue with revolver; handguns continue being used regularly within minutes preceding homicides 6*) July 9th 1911 James Buchanan High School student Johnnie Cochran murdered twenty people classmates & faculty members – most fatally shootings involving pistols 7*) AUGUST 25TH 1912 Ansonia resident Reuben Snyder killed nine people inside his own house with revolver while residing out side town Limits 8* MASSACRE ON SOUTHERN MARCHION CORNER IN MAY OF 1914: AUGUDENT FAMILY TAKES TWO MEN AND TWO GUNS TO THEIR HOME AFTER WORKING AT THE BARBER SHOP NEXT DOOR NEAR STONINGTON HILLS 9*) AUGUST 10TH 1915 PATRICK MCGUIRE KILLS SEVEN PEOPLE WITH REVOLVER IN THE GARDEN OFF EAST HIGHWAY 1009 10* JUNE 15TH 1916 NEW ORLEANS BUSINESS OWNER JOHN SADDOLPHUS COMMITTED AN ERROR WHEN HE HIMSELF PURCHASED THREE ROLLLOCKER PHOENIX . IT WAS NOT UNLAWFUL TO PURCHASE FIREARM AS LONG AS THE GUN WAS NOT BEING USE FOR DIRECT BASIC PROTECTION AGAINST PACKERS OR OTHER CRIMINAL ACTIVITY 11* JULY 5TH 1917 WILLIAM KENNEDY FIRES TWENTY TWO rounds into room occupied by WILBUR DAVIS HIS DAUGHTER CLARA ELIZABETH Kennedy while she slept; presidential assassination attempt 12*) OCTOBER 1st 1918 JOSEPH PASQUALE KILLS ELEVEN PEOPLE INCLUDING HIS WIFE BERNICE WITH SERPENTINE RIFLE WHILE SHE WATCHES FROM HER OWN CAR ON STRAND); THESE ARE THE FIRST GUNSHOT ACCIDENTS IN NEW YORK CITY 13*) NOVEMBER 21ST 1919 EDWIN LOSSITA WRESTLES WITH THIRTEEN MEN AND ONE WOMAN OVER CHARGE OF TRADE SECRETLY ENLISTING IN THE US ARMY WITHOUT MAKING ANNOUNCEMENT TO ANYONE

This includes both handguns and rifles. -Keep ammunition away from children and pets. Ammunition can be a deadly projectile if mishandled or stored improperly. -Make sure that firearms are properly registered with the government. This will help ensure that you are able to purchase them without fear of being scammed or being illegally taken from you. -Install proper firearm locks on all doors and windows where guns are kept, as well as any other closed areas where weapons may be stored. These locks should serially code out each individual gun so that it cannot be opened without knowledge of the key code. -Train your family and friends on how to secure their firearms in case of an emergency or massacre. Make sure everyone knows how to fire a revolver, shotgun, rifle, etc., in case something happens (ie., someone points a gun at them).

The Atlantic City Board of Education approved the placement of a gun security camera in the school during the 2014-2015 school year. Gun security cameras are now commonly found throughout Atlantic City, New Jersey.
