Despite these successes and advancements during his time as Mayor (1876-1878), Jameson Salerno experienced some high levels of frustration with Mayor John Coxe over matters such as zoning laws and water supplies – ultimately leading to Salerno's ouster from office altogether within months.. This situation led to days-long street demonstrations throughout downtown AtlanticCity which were eventually quashed by military forces under Maj.-Gen.(later Lt.-Gen.) Samuel Pemberton..Throughout these tumultuous times – both before and after his ouster –Salerno maintained a close relationship with Pemberton,.
