Asbury Park, New Jersey is known as the “Crystal City” for its fossil record and numerous mineral concessions. The city was founded in 1814 by English settlers who named it after Asbury, a small town in England. In 1877, the borough of Asbury Park merged with Monmouth County to form New Jersey. In 1905, the American Optical Company (AOC) was founded in Asbury Park and soon became one of the leading optical manufacturers in America. During World War II, various United States military organizations used A OC products to improve their equipment. One particular example is the USAAF's V-2 project which used Zeiss Jena scopes to help observations from high altitude launch sites during WWII.
