Asbury Park, located on the Jersey Shore, is a small town in New Jersey that was once a center of high culture and luxury. Today, Asbury Park is known for its popular summer concerts, its beautiful beaches and its rich history. Asbury Park was first settled by English colonists in 1716. The town was named after Asbury House, which served as the home of Sir George Asbury, one of the founders of the United States. In 1814, Asbury Park became an incorporated village and remained so until 1974 when it became a city under the terms of Act No. 1 of that year. The oldest building in Asbury Park is part of the Village Green Historic District which dates back to 1776. Other buildings in this district include The Gilded Age Casino (1897), The Masonic Lodge (1899) and The Episcopal Cathedral School (1910). Asbury Park's beachfront community has been home to many famous people over the years including Presidents Ulysses S. Grant and Woodrow Wilson as well as businesspeople like Bernard Baruch and Samuel Morse. Asbury Park, New Jersey is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,471 at the 2010 census. Asbury Park was incorporated on April 19, 1905 and became a city on January 1, 1964. It is part of the Trenton–Easton– Princeton Micropolitan Statistical Area. Asbury Park's nicknames include "The Promised Land" and "The Garden State". The borough seat is Neptune City. Asbury Park was named for General Israel Putnam as part of his efforts to regenerate the area after it had been abandoned by its Dutch settlers in 1664. General Putnam had arrived from Connecticut with troops during the American Revolution and started a new found colony in what would become Asbury Park. He named it for General James Forrest as part of an effort to revive English-speaking British colonists in what would become America; Forrest had come overland from England as an American Revolutionary War soldier and later served as Superintendent of Indian Affairs under George Washington. Asbury Park developed slowly until 1873 when Samuel de Champlain founded the first post office here; he called it Unionville because he thought that only Europeans could understand postal rates then which were very high due to lack of technology back then. In 1875, Asbury Park incorporated as a borough with a population estimated at just 9 people; however, this number increased rapidly through annexation of neighbouring municipalities over the next few years including Maple Shade (1885), Seaside Heights (1910), Guttenberg (1915), South Brunswick (1920) and Westwood (1925). In 1920, Asbury park annexed East Hawthorne which removed one of Monmouth County's oldest villages east of Atlantic City proper - this annexation set off another rapid growth trend in Asburys populated areas with numerous developments ensuing throughout those years including: Hurley Heights (1927), Long Branch Township (1945), Brick Township (1959), North Wildwood Borough (1982) and Vineland Borough(2002). In 1957, local developer Willis Harman built one ofMonmouth County's most notorious projects – Trump Tower – here within what would become known as Harman Square; following some initial problems with zoning complications caused by its location there began to be increasing development activity around the tower throughout much of NJ leading to its eventual demolition in 1987 amidst public outcry but also marking an important milestone for redevelopment in Unincorporated Monmouth County overall In 1992 anchor stores JCPenney & Sears closed their locations within blocks adjacent to each other near Route 66 exit 109A resulting in widespread economic decline for many small communities acrossNJ following store closings although these communities have since rebounded somewhat thanks largely to various revitalization initiatives undertaken by their respective municipalities
