The name derives from the Assumption of Mary, which took place at the nearby Mount Hope Abbey in 1853. The borough became an incorporated municipality on May 10, 1914. On November 15, 1969, Asbury Park annexed parts of neighboring West Wildwood and Neptune Beach. In 1974, Asbury Park successfully petitioned for annexation by Monmouth County and became a part of that county on January 1, 1975. Asbury Park is one of five municipalities in New Jersey to have been granted city status (the others are Brick Township (1927), Sayville (1985), Ocean City (2007) and Newark-based Paramus Borough (2010)). The first settlers to arrive in what is now Asbury Park were Quakers who established Mount Hope Abbey on October 15th 1685 along with Reverend John Woolridge and William Parsons. The original grant was made by King George II under the terms of the Paterson Agreement which provided for land grants throughout Christendom to Protestant missionary groups including Quakers. It was not until after Governor William Cosby's installation as governor on February 3rd 1702 that any formal land grant was made for Amboy specifically to include present day Asbury Park with a population of 350 souls On July 4th 1776 Major General James Pemberton arrived at Morristown with 1/8thompers or " pioneers " numbering about 50 men underCaptain John Demarest LtCol Nathaniel Greene over 100 men led byLieutenant Colonel Abraham Massey . They camped around mile post 9 ½ east longitude from where they had heard there were rich mines westward near Bordentown called Byroms Mines but no discovery could be made so they returned home without finding any such thing On September 5th Captain Peter Williamson landed his ship HMS Lehigh at Perth Amboy having sailed from London after hearing rumors that new lands had been discovered westward beyond Cape May He went ashore with his party consisting of three guns and four hundred men disembarking at Perth Amborough Landing thinking he found some valuable minerals but nothing was found After spending several days exploring various areas near Perth amboy Captain Williamson retreated back upriver towards Hackensack coming upon a groupof Indians who invited him into their village where he learned they were friendly and offered him food before sending him away again After returning home he wrote to London drawings showing how many square miles were lying within sight of cape may laying waste to all other places he had explored . This information got back to Admiral Howewho ordered Major General de Witt commander North America then sent Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas Whitmore down riverdated March 26th 1777with orders “to explore these new Discoveries” .Captain Williamson reported seeing many good sites for mines near Perth amboy Landing but no action being taken because it was thought there must be more reliable sources than mere rumor
