It was during this time that John White distinguished himself as an able advisor to Governor Thomas Thornburgh regarding matters political and military. The settlement grew rapidly due to the influx of new British colonists and refugees fleeing religious persecution at home. In 1713, when New Jersey became a colony under Great Britain following the American Revolution, Mansfield's boundaries changed so that it included all of modern Monmouth County east of the Hackensack River – thus giving rise to Asbury Park's nickname "the Queen's County". In 1815 as part of efforts led by General James Shields US Army commander during the War of 1812 against Canada, Asbury Park was used as a staging ground for landings along both banks of the Hackensack River leading upriver into Canada proper. One result was that hospitals operated outfitting troops for such operations from Asbury Park until after independence in 1814; these include Drury Hospital located today on South Third Street between Germantown Avenue & York Boulevard which served patients from Trenton until 1861 when it merged with Princeton University Hospital to become Princeton University–Newark Medical Center (); Richmond Asylum also located here before becoming Hunterdon Asylum in 1911; also Newark State Prison opened its doors here in 1886 followed by Bellevue Hospital which moved into its current location across First Street from State House in 1912 before becoming known simply as Bellevue Health Sciences Center (). Finally Broadwalk Place - later renamed Allentown Mall - opened adjacent to Yeshiva University on Allentown Avenue in 1988 just three years after opening as West Side Shopping Plaza/.
