Asbury Park, New Jersey is a small town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. Asbury Park is located on the banks of the Hackensack River and on the east bank of the Raritan River. The population was 12,387 at the 2010 census. Asbury Park is known for its annual Atlantic City conference and as a center for arts and culture. It has also been home to many famous American athletes including Jackie Robinson, Dick Cavett, Muhammad Ali and others. The first Europeans to see Asbury Park were Dutch traders from New Netherland who landed there in 1664. English colonists arrived soon after, settling around what is now Main Street and Babylon Road. In 1714 an agreement was made between British colonists General James Shirley and French trader Nicholas-Jacques Conte to trade with each other through Asbury Park. By 1745 the area had become part of Englewood Township (now West Englewood). In 1837 Asbury Park became part of Monmouth County when it was created from portions of Middlesex County. The townsite which would be developed around what are now several blocks on Main Street was laid out by George Washington Carver in 1881 as his private land grant to provide grazing for his cows while he surveyed section 10 of township line 1 northward from where he stood upon high ground overlooking both rivers then being formed by swampy fields extending into present day Rahway and Sayretown Lakes... The site selected for development comprised 4 lots: 3 near Washington Avenue (later renamed Jefferson Boulevard), one off Center Street just south of Route 22nd Avenue (& later still renamed First Avenue) & one immediately opposite 100th street on Third Avenue which runs northeasterly fromWashington Boulevard... This original site included a sawmill that functioned until 1931 & an Opera House built in 1903 that still stands today (& offers excellent views over Rahway Lake)... Other early businesses include Bakelite Manufacturing Company (1886), A&P grocery store (1910), Wabash Brewing Company (1921), The Dog House barbershop (1927) & Jolson's Dance Hall restaurant(1929). These establishments served as socialites' gathering places during prohibition; however most closed down within a few years post- prohibition due largely to economics problems associated with low demand for liquor following repeal.... Today's most prominent businesses include Macy's Department Store(1950s), Phillips 66 gasoline station/convenience store(1963), PNC Bank branch(1984) & Verizon Wireless shop(2006)... In 1951 two brothers named Mickey Cohen opened their candy store called Cohen's Candy Shop on Orange Street in nearby Sayretown Lakes... Cohen died suddenly before it could open its doors; however his brother-in-law Leon Levy continued operations until 1978 under license from Mickey Cohen’s widow Betty Greenspan...Today there are more than 20 stores operating within the five boroughs surrounding Newark Liberty Airport.. In 1957 Asbury Park elected its first mayor – Clifford Berryhill – becoming only the second municipality ever to do so…Berryhill led the town through some difficult times including riots that year following a car race incident at mile marker 15 on Route 22nd Ave…. However, during his time as Mayor Bridgeport increased funding for public safety while Atwater Village grew rapidly….. After Berryhill’s death in 1958 Bridgeport appointed Raymond Carney as Mayor…. Carney led Bridgeport through some difficult times such as riots that year following a car race incident at mile marker 15 on Route 22nd Ave…. However, during his time as Mayor city coffers were enlarged thanks to state funding related to new highway construction projects.. Today’s largest employer within Borough limits is PNC Bank which employs over 11000 people worldwide encompassing banking activities across multiple locations inside and outside Newark Liberty Airport..... The community took off after Carver donated land adjacent to what are today Fourth Avenue South & Second Streets SE towards Interstate 95/I-95W - this area would come to be known simply as "Carver Square". Here local farmers sold produce directly to cars traveling along I-95 or used it for parking lot spots next door at I-95 Exit 9A.... Over time various small businesses cropped up here such as Lewis dry goods company founded 1912 by Lewis Lewis Jr., butcher shop started 1915 by John Hynes & Fred Wexler; Singer Sewing machines bought 1922 by Adolph Singer; Allstate insurance began service 1953; Rich Products meat market opened 1955.... Through these various enterprises residents maintained close economic ties with one another..... Many notable residents have lived or worked here throughout their lives including numerous mayors throughout Monmouth County including Clifford Berryhill who served two terms beginning in 1957 thru 1978; Raymond Carney who held office from 1958 thru 1984 making himBridgeport’s longest serving Mayor sinceistechnology has deregulation caused large job losses among local manufacturing jobs eliminated during late 80′s recession.........today approximately 30% of all jobs found locally within 5 borough borders are related directly or indirectly to aviation.......
