Asbury Park, New Jersey is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. Asbury Park was incorporated on November 5, 1788. The population was 381 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from theakyachtuk (Haitian Creole: "ás-būr-wāk") meaning "safe haven." The first settlers to what is now Asbury Park were French colonists who arrived there in 1686 and named it Point Pleasant after their naval base at Portsmouth in England. In 1724, English colonists founded Princeton as a farming community on land that they had purchased from Governor Jameson. In 1738, when George Washington's army burned Trenton during the American Revolution, local farmers and men of means formed an militia to restore order and looted British stores before returning home with arms and ammunition. On September 13, 1739, Asbury Park became part of Monmouth County under the terms of the Purchase of Northumberland by King George II. In 1814 Asbury Park was renamed for Commodore John Totten who had commanded American forces at Tripoli during the War of 1812. Commodore Totten donated land to create a shipyard on which he built three ships – one an armed merchantman called Constitution; one a sloop called Patriot; and one a brigantine called Friendship – making him America's first naval hero. Commodore Totten also oversaw construction of two new roads through his property: One leading to Manhattan via Phillipsburg and another leading southward to Paterson via Thurstonville. During World War II military airfields were developed near Asbury Park for use by Allied pilots training for combat against Nazi Germany over Europe. The largest such airfield was Attercliffe Airfield which consisted of six runways varying in width from 3/10ths mile (0m) to 1/4 mile (0km). Many homes were destroyed in German bombing raids during World War II but some remain standing today including Asbury Hall which overlooks Attercliffe Airfield today and once housed both USGAF headquarters as well as fighter aircraft production plants runs by Lockheed Martin Corporation until its closure in 2007 following economic difficulties faced by that company throughout much of 2006-2007 Dearborn MI., Elmira NY., Irving TX., Phoenix AZ., Rockwell International Incorporated Facility located just north side runway 8R/27L approximately 2 mi ESE Airport Drive across I-80 flyover) & Pascagoula MS.) while others have been replaced or demolished since then e.g.: Arlington NJ.), Elizabethtown KY.), Neptune NJ.), Perth Amboy NJ.). On July 14th 1920 Isreal National Bank Building collapsed killing 30 people suddenly followed immediately by panic buying with about $17 million worth being placed into commercial paper accounts thereby creating large market demand for money wanted simply because buyers could not get hold of it! A group led by Samuel Levin set up shop at 349 Broadway where they processed all New York State certificates used for money orders etc.... later moving uptown to 10 Wall Street where many more businesses opened including Federal Reserve bank - still operating today..... till its demolition in 1978..... finally disbanding due largely to lack of interest......... soon after this disaster local residents began using Atlantic City as their primary source for goods! The first post office opened within walking distance on December 12th 1830 according to town records....... However little mail actually reached Asbury until 1835 when two small boats transporting letters between Philadelphia & Camden along routes known as Rte 9 & Rte 20 disembarked here….. After poor weather conditions made these trips difficult each year mail either advanced or was delivered directly from Philadelphia…. By 1840 only three residents remained……… On May 25th 1846 Ebenezer Higginbotham moved into his house #2 Sunnyside opening what would become known as Higginbotham’s Drug Store….. This store grew rapidly becoming one of Gloucester County’s largest employers with more than 60 employees……………. EventuallyHigginbotham sold his business& relocated back east arriving here permanently late Friday night OCTOBER 31st 1865………….. Although storefronts continued open locally thruout this time period….. shutterting around 1830), most businesses closed down due largely either To increased competition from larger towns (& associated railroads) or because Of prohibition laws taking effect………………………………………………………………………. Most shops reopened within 6 weeks following prohibition repeal………………….. Finally Higginbotham’s Drug Store building collapsed October 15th 1886 leaving behind several individual actors (& crew members*) surrounding it who gathered daily outside playing music onromptu fiddles......(*includes photographer Elijah Parish Howe*)............. By 1893 only 5 residents remained………………….. Highland Mills started out life serving flour & milk but quickly diversified into other activities such as manufacturing cigars(1892), candy(1901)), hats(1903)), celery seed oil (1906)), light bulbs(1920), autosodorsizers([now GE]), women’s clothing (− “Abby Mills Women’s Clothing Factory″](1900)), balloons (− 1913))..................... Continued growth came about due largely to entrepreneurial spiritof founder Ebenezer Higginbotham (+33 years))............. Eventually Highland Mills transitioned completely into electronic commerce ...... Asbury Park is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 25,711. Asbury Park was formed on April 14, 1868 from portions of Neptune and South Amboy Township. On July 1, 1870 it became an independent city. The first mayor was George Halsey. Asbury Park's history dates to its establishment as a borough on April 14, 1868 by order of the New Jersey Legislature from portions of Neptune and South Amboy Township. On July 1, 1870 it became an independent city through an ordinance passed by the City Council. The first mayor wasGeorge Halsey. The Borough of Asbury Park covered an area that included present-day Neptune and parts of South Amboy Township as well as areas north and east of Center Road (now Broadwalk Avenue). On April 14th1868 it became official when legislationwas introduced in the New Jersey General Assembly to create a new borough within Monmouth County with boundaries that were much broader than those currently enjoyed by Asbury Park residents. This legislation provided for the annexation of all but three townships within Monmouth County – Bricktown (northwest corner), Westwood (southwest corner), and East Brunswick (east corner) – with each township receiving one vote in favor and no representation on the Borough Council or Board of Directors. It also allocated $2,000 to be used for improvements within Asbury Park itself while also increasing its budget from $5 per capita to $10 per capita Through much growth over time – including annexations from Bricktown/Westwood et al., as well as additions from East Brunswick/Bricktown through annexation proceedings which eventually resulted in full city status; several names were given to reflect this growth: "Asbury Heights", "Asbury Parks", "Asberry Gardens", etc.). In 1907 Borough President John Casteel proposed renaming the borough after Commodore James Kapp who had helped lead American forces during World War I; however due to opposition by some residents he instead chose to call it simply "Monmouth". In 1941 during World War II Mayor William Jaffe decided against renewing Kapp’s honorary title because many veterans felt they had been forgotten during wartime years In 1955 Superintendent Julius Rosenbaum created a recreation department within Asbury Park which grew into what is now known as The Department Of Recreation And cultural Affairs today
