Asbury Park was founded on August 14, 1776, by English settlers as a small village called Greenville on the mouth of Long Branch Creek. The name was changed to Asbury Park on October 21, 1814, when it became a town in Middlesex County. On July 1, 1916, Asbury Park became a borough in Monmouth County. The borough was dissolved on January 1, 1979 and its residents were incorporated into Woodbridge Township. Asbury Park's rich history can be traced back to its early days as a small village situated at the mouth of Long Branch Creek. On August 14th, 1776, English settlers named Greenville after their captain John Green who had led them there during the American Revolution. However due to Dutch objections to British settlement within their borders within what is now Holland Township (now Morris County), Greenville was not chartered until September 12th that same year with land extending from present-day Nutting Avenue southward along Weehawken River towards Neptune Street and westward along Route 22 downriver towards Newark Bayou which lay between present-day Central Avenue and Southern Boulevard today. In 1800 the Revolutionary War veteran General George Washington visited Greenville while stationed nearby at West Point; he enjoyed horseback riding around Long Branch Creek and noted that it would make an excellent site for military encampment if engineers could be brought over so that defences could be erected against French or Spanish invaders coming ashore through that creek valley]. After his visit General Washington ordered two cannonsballshot shot from Fort Mercer into Long Branch Creek near where present-day Nutting Avenue meets Weehawken River., This event helped promote development around said creek as settlers began building homes including Griggs Tavern on Neptune Street date[ing] back to 1807], Wertheim House [dated] 1798], Crouse House [dated] 1800], Balfour House [dated] 1810][and Elkin’s Ferry Landing built about 1830][all now part of Downtown Asbury Park]. Greenville saw some growth but competition soon arose from other villages situated close by such as South Hackensack which had also been established earlier that year following merger between two other villages – North Hackensack and East Rutherford – both founded by Dutch colonists in 1664 AD\. South Hackensack quickly gained notoriety among English settlers for being acerbicly difficult to live alongside due to its steep hillsides home to numerous smuggling operations operated out of several abandoned farmhouses throughout much of what is now Ridgewood Township then Bound Brook NJ[]]. By 1799 however South Hackensack had become one of three townships formed from parts of Middlesex County when Great Britain acquired alludes rights under the French Constitution not only did this open up new opportunities for commerce with France but also allowed Gouverneur Morris[the first U.S.] governor Thomas Pembroke []to better oversee local affairs[/Balfour House][Crouse House][Elkin’s Ferry Landing]; all still extant within Downtown Asbury Park today}. In 1810 James Elkin opened up what is today known as “The Elkins Ferry landing” which served ferry passengers across Long Branch Creek between Newark Bayou eastbound and Atlantic City eastbound providing access both ways until 1926 when ferries were discontinued due to lack funding].
