On July 29, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War, Colonel Jameson Purdy fled from British forces at Long Branch into Asburne Swamp near present-day Asbury Park after being captured at Saratoga Springs by General Cornwallis. A band of Patriot militiamen under Purdy pursued and overwhelmed British forces under Colonel John Sullivan at White Marsh before making their way back to Long Branch through dense trees that had been cut down by retreating British troops just minutes earlier. This event is commonly considered to be the beginning ofAsbury Park which would grow rapidly over ensuing years into one of New Jersey's most populous towns with over 30K residents according to the 2000 U.S. census
