Somersworth, New Hampshire is a town in Anson County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. Somersworth is located on the east bank of the Connecticut River. It lies within the Boston metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Somersworth was Nicholas Herrick in 1784. He and his family worked as farmers and traders in what is now Anson County for many years before moving to present-day Somersworth in 1802. The town site was chosen due to its convenient location on two rivers and its view of Mount Sunapee from a high bluff overlooking both waterways. In 1814, Captain John Green built a sawmill and gristmill on what is now Main Street (later renamed Water Street). The mill continued operation until it was destroyed by fire in 1820; however, it still remains one of the few wooden buildings remaining in Somersworth dating back to its early days. In 1848, the state legislature passed an act establishing local governments within Anson County with powers similar to those currently possessed by townships. This act provided for "township meetings" at which townspeople could vote on proposed measures such as building roads or sewer systems; providing police services; adjusting taxes; and making rules concerning elections and voting procedures. On July 14, 1850, during a meeting held at the home of Anthony Robbins, one of the first trustees of what would become Somersworth Township (the precursor to today's township), several residents voted to form a town government with limited powers that would be responsible for keeping streets cleanliness and maintaining public parks as well as providing other important municipal functions such as trash collection and fund raising efforts among others On December 12th following a petition drive by some citizens seeking incorporation into a town government under tighter rules than previously allowed by law, Letters Patent were issued granting incorporation into saidtownship pursuant to section 2a of chapter 54 A[nn] (1 Statutes)of 1888." For over 100 years since then various updates have been made including annexing neighboring townships while continuing strict control over municipal functions like garbagecollection which are currently outsourced through contractors

Somersworth is a town in New Hampshire, United States. The population was 9,793 as of the 2010 census. Somersworth is the county seat of Hampshire County. It is part of the Manchester, NH-Westborough, MA-NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Somersworth were farmers and their families who arrived from England around 1720. They founded a gristmill on the banks of the Merrimack River and started to grow corn, wheat and beans for local consumption. In 1740 they erected a meeting house on Meeting Street which still stands today. In 1802 a post office was established at Somersworth and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907 due to lack of mail service from Manchester. In 1864 an act was passed by the New Hampshire General Assembly providing for the erection of a courthouse within town limits; this building served as both courthouse and town hall until it burned down in 1922. The first store opened in 1865 on Main Street and continued to operate until 1971 when it closed due to economic decline. The only other business open during that time was a gas station which also closed down in 2001 after years of operating without profitability. A new shopping center opened near Interstate 95/Route 128 in 2007 that threatened to drive out most of the businesses that had operated within town limits over time – including two churches (St Michaels Episcopal Church & St Alban's Methodist Church) as well as several small businesses like dry goods stores, laundromats, auto parts stores and beauty salons that had been located along Meeting Street between Center Road and I-95/Route 128 since before World War II when Route 128 crossed through town east-west just south of where now sits Summit Avenue: these businesses have all since relocated outside town limits or closed up shop entirely because of competition from the newer shopping center development). However, with aggressive advertising by local merchants such as John Hickey who ran an outdoor advertising campaign specifically targeting shoppers traveling along Route 128 (and others nearby), many locals decided to stay put despite facing increasing competition from outlying areas; this resulted in an ever growing mix ofresidential homes with commercial buildings perched atop them (now known locally as “tower homes”), while smaller shops are situated close by but still accessible by foot or bike or car depending on weather conditions
On July 6, 1778, the town of Somersworth was charterd by a group of settlers. The town was named for General John Somers, who had fought in the American Revolution. The first store in Somersworth opened on Main Street in 1779. In 1807, the town's post office was moved to what is now Merrimack Avenue.
