Somersworth is a town in Hampshire County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. Somersworth is located on the border of Goffstown and Waynesboro townships. It lies on the Nashua River. The first settler in what would become Somersworth was John Richardson in 1769. A post office called Somersworth was established in 1771, and remained in operation until 1837. The town name comes from Samuel Somers, who purchased land here in 1794 and built a house known as the "Somersbury". The first store opened in 1813. The town was incorporated as a village by an act of the New Hampshire General Court on February 24, 1912. On January 1, 1917, it became part of Manchester Township when that township was created from portions of Goffstown and Waynesboro townships. On July 16, 1948, the town passed an ordinance creating its own fire department which remained operative until 1990 when it merged with Manchester Township's fire department to form Greater Manchester Fire District No 2. In 2013-14 there were 9 fires reported to Granite Valley Volunteer Fire Department out of a total number of 509 reported incidents; this is down 3% from 2014-15 due primarily to drought conditions which led to reduced funding for fire departments statewide. The early history of Somersworth can be traced back to 1692 when John Somers settled in what is now Somersworth Township. During this time, the town developed as an agricultural center with grain being grown on high ground across from the fairgrounds. At this time, only three people lived in Somersworth-the Postmaster, one justice of the peace and one man employed by the court system-and it was primarily an agricultural community with few businesses or residences other than stores and schools serving its residents. In 1905, during World War I (1914-18), heavy demand for munitions led to increased production within NH at nearby factories including Wellesdyke Plantation where thousands of men were produced over four years while living in unsanitary conditions inside factories that emitted large amounts of air pollution which caused health problems for workers throughout New England . This experience led to local development around Wellesdyke Plantation into what is today known as downtown Somersworth . The war brought about new industries such as shipbuilding along with job losses for many citizens; however, since much manufacturing took place out of state this did not have a significant impact on local economy .
