In 1857, an enterprising man named Amos Kendall purchased a piece of land adjacent to what is now Main Street in Somersworth. Kendall built a cabin on this property and began selling guns and ammunition from his home. This store soon became known as Kendall's Rifle & Pistol Emporium. In 1876, Kendall sold his business to George Smedley Jr., who renamed it Smedley's Sporting Goods Store. It remained at this location until 1934 when it moved to its present location on Business Avenue. Somersworth has experienced many changes throughout its history including becoming a small town growing rapidly during the post-war era; experiencing significant growth during the late 1960s and 1970s with new businesses opening up;declining during the 1980s with few new businesses opening up;and then experiencing significant growth during the 2000s which has produced more recent businesses openings up such as The Albany Baking Company
Somersworth is a town in New Hampshire, United States. The population was 9,583 at the 2010 census. Somersworth is located on the border of Goffstown and Claremont townships. The two towns share a small river, the New England Aquifer. Somersworth has a strong agricultural heritage with dairy and hay production being two of the most important economic sectors. It also has a significant manufacturing sector which produces textiles, furniture, and other products. The first permanent settler in what is now Somersworth was David Sinclair who arrived in 1768 from Connecticut. He built an I-beam mill on the Grand River near present-day Center Street and named it after his home town of Stratford, Connecticut. For many years this mill operated as one of the few commercial mills in New Hampshire; however its days are numbered as it has been converted to residential use. The first post office was established in 1814 by Samuel Tilton under the name Unionbridge but changed to Somersworth due to competition from Bridgeport which had received federal approval for its own postal service that year. In 1824 John Prentice opened a grocery store at present day Main Street and named it after his birthplace of Torrington, Vermont where he had lived when he began selling groceries three years earlier. In 1875 Springfield Businessman Atherton Walthall bought Prentice's store and renamed it Pownal & Walthall Grocery Ltd.; this company became part of Unilever/Pfizer after their merger in 1986.) By 1860 there were only a handful of residences left in what is now Somersworth while 3 businesses still functioned: Prentice's grocery store (which continued until 1942), Atherton Walthall's grocery store (1875-1960), and John Prentice's grocery store (1824-1875). However during the Panic of 1907 some residents decided to move out because they could not afford to maintain their homes or farm animals during that time period; these people organized themselves into groups called "Families Association" or "Townshends." These organizations spent their winters living among themselves before finally returning back home when business conditions improved again around 1915 On July 1st, 1916 local resident Augustus Sheehanacoopen donated land east of Post Road for military training Camp Endicott which would later become known as Fort Benning The first school building was built in 1912 adjacent to Sheehanacoopen’s farmhouse; however this building burned down within 5 months due to firewood scarcity caused by World War I munitions stockpiling nearby In 1925 Mrs Margaret Carney donated land along Post Road for public high school purposes; reorganizing her husband’s successful shoe shop into this new school district entity In 1951 Brigham Young University affiliated with New Hampshire Agricultural College creating an intercampus Transfer Agreement between NHAC and BYU giving students access to all courses offered by both institutions without having to take any exams . In 1957 WHEC abandoned high school operations becoming an affiliate station with KNCB television stations . In 1976 NH School District No 2 merged with neighboring Portsmouth School District No 1 forming Greater Portsmouth SchoolDistrict

In 1984, the towns of Unadilla and Dover merged to form one municipality called Somersworth-Unadilla. In 2006, the name of thetown changed back to Somersworth when it joined with Unadilla to form the newTownship of Somersworth-Unadilla. Somersbury has been known for itscottage cheese since before European settlement began there. One early version of what we now know as cottage cheese was made from cow's milk and sour cream mixed together with bread crumbs and ground up dried peas or cornmeal
