Somersworth is a town in New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. Somersworth is part of the Manchester-Londonderry-Fayetteville metropolitan area. It lies on the border of Fayette County and Carroll County. The first settlers were therami (Algonquian) people who built their homes near what is now Somersworth around 1810. They were followed by other groups of Algonquians and Piscataways who also inhabited this area for some time before moving away to more permanent homes elsewhere in New Hampshire or Canada. The town began as a small farming community with a few families until it became an incorporated village in 1902 when it had a population of just over 100 residents. The village quickly grew into a thriving community that boasted several businesses including a post office, grocery store, bank, doctor, and more than 20 churches which served the local population during its early years. The late 1800s saw dramatic changes take place in Somersworth as new waves of immigrants arrived from Europe looking for opportunities in America’s largest country. Many Of these newcomers brought with them their traditional skills and technologies which helped to shape Somersworth’s unique culture and economy during its early years. Notable among these newcomers were Germans who founded numerous technological companies such as Siemens AG and Hanover Electric Company; Poles who established two cotton mills; Irishmen who opened several stores; Scotsmen who started four taverns; Italians who opened one bakery; Greeks whose businesses flourished in the cigar industry; Vietnamese immigrants whom ran an Asian market place for local farmers before moving on to found their own businesses elsewhere in America.;and Swedes who founded two restaurants – one serving Americanized Swedish cuisine while the other became known for its Danish dishes.). During World War II, many families evacuated to New York City or Boston due to patriotic reasons but many others chose to stay behind to fight against Nazi Germany and its allies.. Some excellent examples of this hard fought spirit can be seen throughout Somersworth where citizens banded together to help reopen local businesses after the war ended - such as donating foodstuffs, furniture, clothing etc., that had been confiscated by authorities following hostilities halted.. In 1951, Somersworth became home to its very first high school when Union School District #1 merged with neighboring North Hampton School District #2 creating what would become known as “the three schools” system which continues today through merger & reestablishment of districts across NH education landscape). In 1957 another district merge occurred when Portsmouth-Manchester Schools District merged with Wolfeboro-Wareham Schools District creating what would become known as “the five schools” system which still exists today across NH education landscape). In 1970 another district merger took place when Merrimack Valley Regional SchoolDistrict merged with Dover-Wakefield Regional SchoolDistrict creating what would become known as “the eight schools” system which still exists today across NH education landscape). These recent consolidations have only increased enrollment within our existing districts makingbereducation an important priority for our educators! . Today there are 9 public schools located within walking distance of each other plus 2 private schools located nearby( Farmington Hills Montessori Academy & Granite Falls PreK-12th school) makingereducation central for all Residents! Additionally we offer childcare services thru Commonweal Family Services(a non profit organization) providing quality care for kids up until 6th grade along withaftercare services thru summer day camps/ institutes! . Somersworth is a town in Hampshire County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. Somersworth is part of the Manchester-by-the-Sea, NH Micropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2000 census, there were 2,563 people living in Somersworth. In antiquity it was known as "Ischia". Somersworth has been settled by English settlers since the 16th century. The first permanent settler arrived in 1634 and named his land after Sir John Somers who had founded Ashburton Manor near London four years earlier. When Sir John's daughter married an American Indian named Beer they may have moved to this area because it then lay within what is now Manchester Township according to an 1802 map. The town was first organized on February 15, 1789 when voters approved a charter for a town meeting which held its first session on March 12 that year. On November 4 of that year, the General Court published an act establishing what would become Somersworth as a village with limits on west side of river Piscataqua and east side extending southward to where present day Route 6 meets Interstate 95 (then called US 20). On May 10, 1792 Samuel Adams set out from Portsmouth with five other men including one from Derby Colony and arrived at what is now West Rutland Road in Somersworth about two weeks later having walked overland from Lebanon Valley which he had established some time before while still living in Derby Colony
Somersworth was first settled in 1619 by the Merrimack tribe of Native Americans. The town was originally called "Woonsocket." It became a part of New Hampshire in 1768. Somersworth had a population of about 100 people when it welcomed its first white settlers, including Samuel Morse and his brother Alfred. The town slowly grew over the years, eventually reaching a peak of around 400 people in the 1850s. However, thanks to an influx of Jews from Eastern Europe, the town's population decreased rapidly over the next few decades. By 1960, Somersworth had only a few hundred residents remaining.
