Somersworth is part of the Manchester–Newton area and has a post office with ZIP code 03609. The first settlers in Somersworth were Nathaniel Dow and his wife Sara as well as Daniel Gleason and his wife Sarah who came from Watertown, Massachusetts. There are many stories about early days in Somersworth including one where an Indian named Sachem killed two men while they were fishing on the river. This incident inspired Nathaniel to name the town after himself which he did in 1778 when he moved from Watertown to become the first settler of what would eventually be called Somersworth. In 1810, John Fenton became the second settler of what would become known as Somersworth when he bought land northeast of present day Somersworth from Richard Barton for $200+. In 1812, during Andrew Jackson's presidency, a group of citizens met at Fenton's house on High Street to petition for incorporation intoManchester Township due to their lack ofroads and other problems they faced. The vote resulted in incorporation being granted without any discussion or debate; however, it took until 1861 for this ruling to be overturned by a referendum that passed with 71% support. As a result of this decision, Manchester Township was abolished and merged with Portsmouth Township to form Manchester–Newton Township effective February 1st, 1861. Today there are still some residents living within Manchester–Newton Township who maintain connections with both municipalities through special elections held every four years that allow them to vote on issues affecting both townships but also individual members serving as mayors or trustees for their respective municipalities within those townships (i.e., Manchester-Newton School Districts). Somersworth was founded in 1768 by Captain John Somers and his family as a small trading post on the Nashua River. The first store in Somersworth was built byCaptain John Somers and his wife Anne in 1771. For many years it was the only store in town. In 1814, Captains James Waddell and Timothy Pickering established a ferry service across the river to allow goods to be transported between Portsmouth and Amesbury. This made Somersworth an important commercial center during the early 19th century. In 1828, Captains Ebenezer Chauncy Dodge and Augustus Kelley bought part of the town from Captains John Somers and Anne Somers for $2,000 cash. They renamed it Dodgeville after their new home town on Long Island where they had grown up. Dodgeville became an important agricultural community with several large families farming land around dodgeville Creek which later became known as Westfield Township
