Somersworth is a small town in New Hampshire, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is the only town in Exeter County. Somersworth is home to two high schools, Exeter Academy and Hillsborough High School. The smaller Somersworth Elementary School serves the village of Somersworth and portions of neighboring Williston. The first settler in Somersworth was John Morse who arrived on July 10, 1778. He and his family would live in what is now the south side of town between what are now Third Street and Fourth Street. In 1814, Samuel Morse Sr., father of George Washington Morse visited Somersworth while he traveled through the area for business reasons and purchased land east of present-day Second Street from John Morse's widow Susannah Childs for $270 cash with four cows and four hogs to support themselves for twenty years until they could sell their land for more money. Two years later, on November 2nd, 1816 Samuel Morse Jr., bought another piece of land east of Second Street from his brother-in-law Nicholas Coffin (died 1839). This purchase would give him rights to fish in both lakes Winnipesaukee and Ossipee which he would use to develop his commercial fishing business over time. By 1840, there were 8 people living in that area including 3 farmers and 5 fishermen along with 4 slaves working on farms in nearby Randolph County bringing production down by 50% due to competition from free labor within the town limits as well as outside sources such as shipbuilding yards across Lake Winnipesaukee where ships were built without any stops off shore so that goods brought back ashore could be sold cheap overseas! By 1870 there were 35 families residing here with 375 acres valued at $4,000! By 1880 there were 154 families here with 623 acres valued at $20,000! And by 1890 there were 246 families here with 1,048 acres valued at $40,000!!! Today’s population today (2010) is 798 residents making it one of NH’s smallest towns by population size! Today’s economy has been based largely on agriculture since its inception; however some important businesses include: Exeter Academy which offers educational opportunities for students throughout NH; Hillsborough High School which provides excellent education options for students statewide; The Chamber Of Commerce which helps promote economic growth throughout NH through events like marketing meetings/gatherings etc.; Pee Wee’s Pizza & Pasta located just outside the gates providing local cuisine to all manner visitors coming intoNH; several churches serving local needs such as St Johns Episcopal Church located next door to Pee Wee’s Pizza & Pasta as well as Holy Cross Catholic church also located right next door proximate to St Johns Episcopal Church;; numerous restaurants within walking distance including Blue Hill Cafe just inside the gates adjacent to Pee Wee’s Pizza & Pasta as well various bars/pubs scattered throughout downtown Lisbon having many events or concerts taking place each season!
