Somersworth, New Hampshire is a town in Lincoln County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the five towns in Lincoln County. The name Somersworth comes from English settlers who named it for John Somers (1621-93), a wealthy merchant and political figure in Boston. The first permanent settler in Somersworth was James Gifford (1812-92). He built a house on the site of what is now Central Square in 1836. Gifford's heirs sold the square to Nathan Hale and his wife Hannah Greenfield Hale in 1875 for $6,000 US. They named it after their father-in-law, General Israel Putnam Chase (1786-1863), commander of American forces during the Mexican–American War and later Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of War. That same year they also donated land to build High School which opened its doors on October 15th, 1876. In 1865 Gifford had also donated land near present day North Avenue and Main Street to help create a town square around which new homes could be built without having to go through soliciting process like that used for earlier donations.(Dixon) The first post office was established at Somersworth on November 24th, 1837 by Abel Bovey with letters sent out from Manchester.(Goudreau) In 1870 Samuel Morse set up shop here as an inventor.(Fletcher) Morse left Somersworth after receiving an order from President Ulysses S. In 1912 local residents formed another volunteer fire department called "Manchester Volunteer Fire Department". This organization still operates today(Fletcher). On July 4th 1915 local citizens raised money and bought permits necessary to establish an amusement park called "Somersworth Park". The park opened its doors on October 15th 1916(Hancock). In 1951 local authorities merged into the larger town of Manchester when that community increased its population by 25%. In 1701, John Gorham sold land that he had purchased from the Pequot tribe for £10 per acre. This included what is now downtown Somersworth and much of modern-day Hillsborough Township. During colonial times, Somersworth was an agricultural center with extensive rye and corn mills as well as tannery and cattle ranching operations. Many early residents were Quakers who cultivated tobacco until it became available in Europe; many others worked as tradesmen or laborers in nearby towns such as Portsmouth or Lebanon before moving to Somersworth during independence era. The arrival of railroad service helped provide new opportunities for commerce and industry within our community throughout its history; today there are several key economic sectors that thrive due to their presence here – retail trade, transportation/utilities, education/healthcare services etcetera
