The town's first store was opened in 1840 by local businessman George Wetherington. Over time, other businesses were started including afactories (1841), post office (1846), insurance company (1848), school (1849), and a dispensary ( 1860). The population of Johnstown grew steadily until around 1880 when it peaked at around 100 people. However, due to increasing immigration and industry within the town limits as well as increased competition from other towns throughout New Hampshire, Johnstown slowly declined over the next several decades. In 1978, it ceased to exist as an independent municipality when it merged with neighboring Randolph to form the current city of Somersworth.

It lies on the west bank of the Ossipee River, about 20 miles northwest of Manchester and 30 miles east of Boston. The first settlers in what is now Somersworth arrived in 1777 by way of Truro and Portsmouth. They were led by Captain John Smith, who had traveled through that area before. The town was platted in 1801 by Major General Nathaniel Banks as part of the Granite State Territory. Rockingham County was organized from portions of Hillsborough and Franklin Counties in 1828. In 1870, when New Hampshire became a state, Somersworth became its third county seat; it had been two-thirds rural since its early days as a small community on the banks of the Ossipee River. In 1930, Somersworth annexed most of neighboring unincorporated territory (mostly farmland) to form what is today known as West rockingham Township; this annexation has not been reversed since then. According to US Census Bureau reported data for 2000, there were 1,812 residents living in 639 households out of which 39% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54% were married couples living together, 12% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24% were non-families. Of all households $20 or less per month constituted 28%

Somersworth is the largest town in Hampshire County and the seat of Hillsborough Township. The name Somersworth derives from a Benedictine priory that once stood here. The first settlers arrived in 1768, when George Washington surveyed the area for his farm purposes. In 1802, John Fenton founded a gristmill on the Haverhill River at present-day Somersworth. The town became known as Fenton's Mills because heowned it until his death in 1836. In 1852, an act was passed by Congress recognizing the towns of Dover andManchester as cities within their respective counties; this action made Somersworth an official city within NH. On December 15, 1860, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked and destroyed a Union army brigade under Brigadier General Lafayette Capps at Wellston Ford near present-day Manchester (then Mount Holly). This event is generally considered to be one of the most bloody battles fought in New Hampshire history. It took many months for reinforcements to arrive and Ewell retreated back into Virginia after suffering heavy losses including 5 officers and 50 men killed or wounded; furthermore $5 million worth of property was lost or damaged as a result of this battle alone. In 1865, NH ratified a state constitution which granted city status to Manchester while Dover remained unincorporated with its own government
The town of Somersworth was first settled in 1772 by Hannah and John Somers. The town was named for the English title of "Somerset" and it was granted a charter in 1811. In 1850, the town had a population of 785 people. The post office was established in 1876, and closed in 1975.
