From its beginnings as a small farming village on settlers' families' farms in 1785 until it became a town in 1854 it experienced growth in both size and importance due largely to its location: close enough by for fishing but also accessible by wagon traffic from Hartford or New York City. The first land grant for what would become Somersworth was given by King George III in 1785. That same year construction began on what would become Homebush Pond which served as a farmstead for about thirty years before becoming an inn called The Manor House (now known as The Tavern). In 1802 Nathan Shephard established himself in Somersworth with his wife Jemima Shephard after moving from Windsor where he had been a justice of peace. By 1810 there were twenty five residents living in four houses including Mr & Mrs Saunders who operated an ice cream parlor across from Homebush Pond; they were soon followed by three other families: John Bomberger, Ebenezer Morse and their daughter Eliza Jane Bomberger (1811-1892). There are no surviving records of these early settlers but they are believed to have left descendants today living near modern day Somersworth Center Mall and Old Bridge Road

Today, Somersworth is still home to many of its original residents who continue to live and work here throughout the year. Its rich history remains intact thanks to the hard work of its citizens who have preserved both its traditions and culture
