The first settlers in what would become Somersworth were four men from Exeter who founded a small farm on the east side of present-day Somersworth in 1792. By 1800, there were over 100 people living in Somersworth. In 1802, two brothers - Gideon and Elijah Green - bought land on the west side of present day Somersworth for $1 per acre (the price had been lowered earlier that year by Alexander Hamilton as part of his efforts to encourage development along Route 8). They built a log cabin and named it "Greene's Ferry". They began to process natural gas from shale near their property and sold gas through an airtight pipeline they built across their property to Manchester and other towns in central New England. In 1828, Gideon Green died suddenly while out hunting with his brother Elijah; his wife took over running the farm until her husband's death two years later. She then married Major General Nathaniel Lyon who became proprietor of Greene's Ferry & Company which ran ferry services between Portsmouth and Boston Harbor until 1903. In 1834, Major General Lyon donated 30 acres (12 hectares) near modern day downtown Somersworth to build a public square on which the state fairgrounds now stand – this donation marked the beginning of what would be called "Somersworth's" agricultural heyday; until recently, much of what makes up today's community was based upon Agriculture production only In 1870, John Addison Allen acquired 640 acres (240 hectares) surrounding present-day downtown from James Fenton for $5 per acre ($100 million adjusted value). Allen developed this land into one ofNHs most successful agriculture communities – he foundedADD Inc., one ofNewHampshire's leading farming companies – through market gardening/agricultural production enterprises such as Feeding America (now known as USDA), Pioneer Hi-Bred Wheat farmers' markets (now known as GVF Markets), Apple orchards etc.. He also created several churches including First Presbyterian Church which stands today adjacent to The Post Office building on Main Street opposite Elyria High School He remains credited with being one ofNHs most Significant Individuals having left an enduring legacy both socially and economically..Many notable families have ties to Somersworth including: Dudley , Duffey & Parks ; Ashe , Cummings & Demarest ; Lynch , Doherty & McNamara AfterAllen died in 1907 his children divided his estate among themselves butkept some portionsofthelandincludingadditional 640 acres (+/- 10%).
