The name means "settlement of the people" in English. In 1802 it became a separate town under the name of Somersworth after James Somers, who had purchased land from David Carteret for $5 per acre. It remained so until 1959 when it reverted to its original name. The first store in Somersworth opened on Main Street in 1803 and continued to operate until 1907. The Whites Store building still stands and is used as a bakery today. It was also during this time that George Washington met with some local farmers at their home on High Street before going into exile in Boston. In 1822 John Safford donated land for a smallpox hospital which became known as Safford Hospital and continues to be used today as a medical center with over 100 beds. also located here are two schools - one high school operated by Granite School District #1, another public school operated by Selectmen #3 & 4

Somersworth is part of the Manchester-by-the-Sea, NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Somersworth was Nicholas Baker in 1799. The town was platted in 1803 and named for John Somers, 2nd Viscount Granville. Somersworth was incorporated as a village in 1825 and became a town in 1853. In 1916, the commercial center of Somersworth were destroyed by an fire that destroyed many homes and businesses including Goudy's department store which had been open for over 125 years. The present day courthouse dates back to 1912 when the city of Manchester built a new courthouse on South Main Street. The original building still stands and is used as office space today. A new courthouse was built on Main Street between Maple and Union Streets in 1990 which replaced the old building which had been damaged by a storm six years earlier. The elementary school located across from Goudy's closed its doors due to financial troubles in 2001 but has since reopened with new name "Weston Day School". In 2007, it merged into nearby Middlebury Elementary School (now Weston Middle School). Another elementary school called "Bellefontaine" closed its doors after just one year due to finances; it reopened under new management with renamed facilities soon afterwards further down Maple Street near North High School before ending up closing again because of low enrollment rates two years later Finally much later another elementary school called "Windham Heights" opened next door to Bellefontaine Elementary after several rounds of fundraising but folding within weeks due to low enrollment rates too It should be noted that all 5 schools mentioned here are not actually defunct - they have only changed their names or closure dates! In recent times there has been some progress made towards revitalization projects such as plans for a new library/cafeteria complex adjacent to West High School which will include an outdoor amphitheater similar to what is currently available at Belford Academy; this project faces opposition from some Residents who feel that having an amphitheater closer to home would do more harm than good since it will likely result in increased traffic congestion around West Highschool - though no decision has yet been made about whether or not this project will proceed any time soon! In addition there are also plans being discussed for developing land adjacent to Spring Mill Pond north of town – this area has seen quite some development recently involving lots of housing units (though no final decisions have yet been made) – although these plans remain largely unconfirmed
