The town began as an agricultural community and today has a strong manufacturing presence with a variety of businesses including several paper mills, one steel company, two agriculture companies and a number of other businesses. Somersworth also has a large library which provides access to over 150 books and periodicals. Somersworth was founded by John Prentice in 1784 as an agricultural community on the banks of the Merrimack River. Prentice built his first home there in 1785. The community grew rapidly and by 1810 it had 10 homes, 2 stores, 4 blacksmiths, 2Drivers for teams of horses and wagons (the first auto dealership in New England), 3 physicians (2 from Massachusetts General Hospital and one from Dartmouth College), 1 schoolhouse (a wing of the Congregational Church) and 5 Masonic Lodges - all under one roof! In 1814 John Ireland arrived in Somersworth with his family after fleeing religious persecution in Ireland. He purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land around what is now downtown Somersworth from Prentice for $8 per acre ($/ hectare). Ireland named his new community "Ireland" after himself while still residing within the boundaries of Prentice's original township name "New Britain." In 1830 Joseph Pulitzer bought some land east of downtown from Irishman James Beattie for $5 per acre ($/ hectare). Pulitzer renamed his new community "New York" after himself while still residing within the boundaries of Beattie's originaltownship name "Manchester." In 1948 Raymond Loewy moved to town from Billerica where he had been active as president of Loewy & Partners Architects Incorporated since 1923. Loewy became founder & CEO emeritus at Towne Realty Corporation which later merged into Isreal Realty Corporation which then merged into Kushner Companies LLC..Loewy remains owner or beneficial owner through their trusts until his death on May 12th 2020 . On that date he will be interred at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery located just east off I-95 exit 119A in central Somersworth next to Patsy Cline’s parents

Somersworth was first settled by English colonists in 1692 as an agricultural community on the border of what are now Vermont and Massachusetts. The town name honors General John Winslow (1585-1637), who led an unsuccessful invasion of New England during King Philip's War in 1675. The townsite circular drive around downtown was built by developer Ralph Ruggles in 1961 to commemorate the centennial of his arrival in Somersworth from Rhode Island with his new company, American Roofing and Heating Corporation. In 2006, Ruggles donated $1 million to help create a library and science center in the town center; construction began that year and finished in 2009. Today, more than 50% of all school district students attend local public schools—the highest concentration of any municipality within Manchester-Hollis metropolitan area—largely because it is one mile (1 kilometer) to the nearest private school. One significant industry located near Somersworth for many years has been printing paper products such as envelopes and cards before they were developed into electronic forms such as email or social media posts. Paper mills closed throughout most of New England after World War II but continued operations until 1984 at Peabody Paper Co., which still produces cards and envelopes from its building on Meeting Street today. Other businesses have since closed or transformed themselves into new sectors: There is now a small grocery store called Harvest Moon Farms (founded by former employees at another paper mill), while two other large retailers have opened up: Michaels Gifts & More (a retailer founded by four brothers who made their mark selling children's toys) and Hudson's Place Marketplace LLC(a food court operator). Ivanhoe Paper Products Corp., which operated a paper plant adjacent to Ironton High School until it closedtered sales there in early 2007 due to weak economic conditions; then became known as Pinnacle Graphics Inc.—an online graphics store that also operates outbuildings owned by Ivanhoe outside Manchester-Hollis—and reopened under this name later that year with plans to reopen the high school campus soon thereafter along with furniture stores, shoe stores, Target Outlet Center/GardnersvilleTarget Mall across from Interstate 95 southbound exit 6A,, service centers for mechanics shop owners,[…] several hundred jobs were created when Ivanhoe reopened after being idle for over five years

The population of Somersworth reached 2,000 in 1775 and 5,000 by 1800. In 1814, the town incorporated as a village. The population of Somersworth peaked at 20,000 in 1920 and declined to 10,000 by 1930. However, the economy boomed during World War II with manufacturing and shipbuilding being major contributors. After the war ended, the population decreased rapidly and ceased to grow again until 2000 when it reached 10,000 again.
