Somersworth is a town in New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,591 at the 2010 census. Somersworth is the county seat of Rockingham County. The town was named after Englishman John Somers, who settled there in 1734. Somersworth is located on the border of Grand Valley and Rockingham Counties. It lies between the towns ofManchester and Nashua, about 10 miles (16 km) west of Manchester and 8 miles (12 km) east of Nashua. According to the 2010 census, Somersworth has a total area of 32 square miles (86 square kilometers).

The town was named after the English county of Somersetshire, which is located in the northeastern corner of England. The first time that the town was mentioned in a deed or record was on November 10, 1692 when it was purchased from Robert Cushing by Capt. John Somers Sr., Lt. Govt., Mr. Isaac Norris and others for £2 6s 4d. In 1802, the New Hampshire Legislature changed the name to Somersworth Falls because the falls were said to be “the most beautiful instance of natural beauty in this part of New Hampshire” Somersworth had a Post Office from 1802 until 1868 In 1870, an act became effective providing for township organization within New Hampshire under a new system known as “ unitary government” The first election for township officers took place on October 11, 1870 and James Ayer won office as Township Treasurer with 73% of the total vote . On November 7th following he resigned to take up a seat in the New Hampshire Senate
