Somersworth is located on the eastern border of Manchester County and is bordered by Randolph to the north and east, Lebanon to the south and west, and Pembroke to the northwest. It lies within Goffstown Township. The first settlers in Somersworth were Englishmen who arrived during King George's War in 1703. They built a small farmstead on what is now Main Street. In 1811, John Fenton bought land from the Indians near present-day Palmer Road and started farming there. He named his farm Westfield after himself (now part of Manchester). Fenton died in 1836 and his land passed through several hands until it was acquired by James Smeaton in 1868. Smeaton founded an insurance company there in 1870 and renamed it Parkinsonshire Insurance Company Limited. It became known as Somersworth Insurance Corporation Ltd., abbreviated "Somersworth" until 1984 when it changed its name to Somersworth Corporation Incorporated. The company has since been owned by Cerberus Capital Management LP since 2013%. The first school in Somersworth was built on what is now Broadway Street around 1800 A.D.. It was called the Indian School but later changed its name to "Hingham Academy." In 1827, Wm Copley donated land for a public school which became known as "Hingham Female Seminary." There were two schools in Somersworth before1878: one for boys operated by Congregationalist ministers atMain Street corner of Broadway; another for girls operated by Unitarian ministers atShepherd's Chapel off Center Road (). On December 3, 1850, Revs Jno Hawkesbury (a clergyman from Norwalk)and Edwin Hoyt opened their own academy "(formerly Hingham Female Seminary)" which became known as "Somersworth Female High School." This private high school continued operation until 1978 when it merged with nearby Granite High School to form Granite-Somerswich Schools Corporation (). This corporation sponsored many extracurricular activities such as band, orchestra, dance team and more while also providingMany scholarships/financial assistance programs for students
