The name is derived from the ancient English settlement of Somerset, which was located on the border of modern day Somersworth and Keene. -In 1801, the town became a part of New Hampshire. -Since then, it has undergone many changes, including becoming an agricultural center during World War II and experiencing economic growth in the 1990s and 2000s. -Today, Somersworth is a small community with a population of about 730 residents.
Somersworth is a town in New Hampshire, United States. The population was 10,552 at the 2010 census. Somersworth is the principal city of the Somersworth–Concordia Micropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of 14,711 as of 2016. The first Europeans to visit what is now Somersworth were French traders in 1609. The area nowincludes part of the town of Concord and was named for Sir Humphrey Somers who traded here in 1630. Concord was founded by Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1784 as a result of an agreement between him and General Henry Knox that provided for military stores and land grants to be distributed among various settlements in Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1801, the town became a part of New Hampshire when it was created from portions of two other towns – Manchester and Chesterfield – by an act passed by the New Hampshire General Assembly. In 1865, construction began on what is now Oneida Lake Boulevard which would later become Route 1A (now I-93). The route ran through partsof present-day Somersworth before becoming concurrent with US Route 2 (now I-93) just north of townline in 1947. After years of discussion and debate over whether or not to annex neighboring towns into Somersworth proper, voters approved annexation on November 3, 1958 via voting Proposition A; however no action followed until 1962 when questionnaires were mailed to residents asking if they wanted to join forces with their neighboring towns for economic development purposes only; no response was received from within either community so annexation proceeded without further ado In 1969, efforts began to purchase land east of Oneida Lake Boulevard from the former owner who had been operating a farm there since 1802 while also allowing access to the property for local businesses including grocery stores and hotels; this resulted in plans being put together for building an apartment complex on site but due to funding limitations this project never came off as intended On July 15th 2002, during Hurricane Irene damages caused extensive flooding throughout much southeastern NH., mailboxes across town went out with notices that water levels had risen so high they could not be reached without diving under homes - similar notices were posted along Oneida Lake Boulevard days later emergency responders found people living at high water tables inside abandoned buildings which made getting help very difficult given recent rains . After residents made multiple pleas for organizations such as Red Cross or Salvation Army helicopters or boats available simply because there wasn't anything else anyone could do without risking lives members from both agencies eventually arrived after evening prayers on July 17th . At least 8 people died from flash flooding that afternoon alone making it one fatalities per hour during Irenee . It took over 24 hours for all areas affected by Irenee before most properties had recovered from damage leaving many families struggling financially even after several months Of work crews have still not fully repaired roads washed out numerous small streams turned into raging creeks complete lack OF signage makes finding your way extremely difficult night & day especially if you don’t know where your house is & how deep water goes .. cosmetically speaking some houses are completely ruined worse than others but overall its still devastating seeing your loved ones home destroyed like that especially knowing you can’t go back & help them Recovery has taken longer then expected due mainly to weather factors lots more money spent then needed & little change planned

Somersworth experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century due to its location near two major railway lines and its role as an agricultural center for the southern Hillsborough County region. However, during World War II Somersworth's economy suffered due to its strategic location on Route 6 within easy reach of Nazi Germany. Today, Somersworth remains an important local community with a strong cultural heritage and active civic life.

In 1925, the towns of Manchester and Goffstown merged into Somersworth.
